Don't even know how I would go about solving this math problem?

From the following determine the position and color of each house, the nationality per person, his fav food and drink, and name of his pet.1) There are 5 houses and the green one is directly right of the ivory one.2) The Norwegian lives in the first house.3) The Englishman lives in the red house and the Norwegian is next to the blue house. 4) The Japanese loves chestnuts and Donder is the Spaniard's pet.5) The Ukrainian drinks punch and the Japanese drinks tea. This is all I can fit, Asked by Katebaby17 11 months ago Similar questions: solving math problem Science > Math.

Get a piece of paper, and colored pens, and draw it out! Use the process of elemination. For instance, draw a red house, and write Englishman on it, as you know that is correct.

Write down what you know to be true, and work from there.

You need to right down the variables and what you know about each one and arrive at the answer through reasoning and the process of elimination. Do? RequestId=75554009&startIndex=3&filter=QAndA&profileUserId=74021540.

My teacher said that approach would work however it would be difficult because it would be like 10 rows and 25 columns. Soo .. ahhhh Katebaby17 11 months ago .

Here are the variables :Nationality - Norwegian, Englishman, Japanese, Ukranian, and Spaniard. Color - Yellow, Blue, Green, Ivory, and Red. Drink - Hot Chocolate, Punch, Egg nog , Tea and Wassail.

Pet Names - Rudolph, Blitzen, Prancer, Dancer, Donder. Katebaby17 11 months ago .

I drew out all 5 houses and got so far using process of elimination.1st Yellow House - Fruitcake, Norwegian.2nd Blue House - Punch, Ukrainian, Prancer's Owner. 3rd Green House - Chestnuts, Japanese, Tea ..4th Ivory - Donder, Spaniard, No Tea, No Punch5th Red - Hot Chocolate, Plum Pudding, EnglishmenNot sure on any though .. And i'm stuck here. Katebaby17 11 months ago .

It looks like you have 6 parameters:House colorHouse orderFoodDrinkNationalityPetYou need to set up a grid with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (house order) across the top, and the other 5 parameters down the side. You need to use elimination and logical exclusion to solve this. You need to track how each clue limits the choices for each block in the grid.

I note at the top of each block when a choice has been eliminated from that block. In clue #1, it says that Green is to the right of Ivory. I note that the first block in the color row cannot be green by placing a small G at the bottom, and putting a small I at the bottom of the last block in the color row, since Ivory cannot be last because Green must be to its right.

Some clues cannot be used until later in the process, so cross out the clues or parts of clues you have used. As you fill in the blocks, go back and recheck the possibles and impossibles. Clue 2 says N goes in the first block of nationality, and clue 3 says to but a B in the second block of color.

Clue 3 says that Englishman and Red go together, so I put a small E at the top of blocks 3, 4, and 5 for Nationality, and a small R at the top of blocks 3, 4, and 5 for Color. This keeps the clues visible on the grid so it is easier to recognize when the clues can be used. You cannot use clues 4 and 5 yet.

Clue 6 says to put an E in the middle block for Drink, and to put a small T and P at the bottom of block 4 in Drink to remind you that tea and punch cannot go there. Now you can use clue 5 to put a small P at the bottom of block one of Drink, since the Ukranian drinks Punch, but does not live in house 1, so house 1 cannot have a P for drink. And put a small T at the bottom of the same block since the Japanese drinks tea but does not live there.

Now that you have narrowed it down to 2, you can put a small W and H at the top of Drink blocks 1 and 4, and a small P and T at the top of Drink blocks 2 and 5 to remind you where these drinks can and cannot go. Clue 7 starts a chain reaction. The house with tea is also green, but tea is only allowed in blocks 2 and 5, and block 2 is already blue.So house 5 must be Green and have Tea, which means house 2 must have Punch in the Drink row.

The Ukranian drinks punch in clue 5 so a U goes in block 2 of nationality. Clue 1 says green is to the right of Ivory, so block 4 of Color gets an I. Look at where we put the small R's for color.

We just filled 2 of them in, so R must go in block 3, and block 1 must be Yellow. Note this differs from your answers to BosM. I hope this gets you started.

I love these puzzles.

Yep! I think we have the same general idea just a different way of doing it, however I drew out all 5 houses and got so far using process of elimination.1st Yellow House - Fruitcake, Norwegian.2nd Blue House - Punch, Ukrainian, Prancer's Owner.3rd Green House - Chestnuts, Japanese, Tea ..4th Ivory - Donder, Spaniard, No Tea, No Punch5th Red - Hot Chocolate, Plum Pudding, EnglishmenNot sure on any though .. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
