I am assuming you are using iTunes here. What you have to do is to move iTunes onto your external hard drive. Then you will be able to sync your music on your external drive. So now, instead of having iTunes on your computer hard drive, it will be on the external hard drive.
THe problem with this is that if you have already moved over your music, then when you move over iTunes it will not be able to find your music on the external drive. It is kind of a lengthy process to describe how to do this, but not lengthy to do. I suggest reading this article.
It is a great one about transferring your music. ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/... only pain of moving your music is that if you want to listen to your music on your computer, you will have to hook up your external drive to it. But being that you have already moved all your music to your external drive, it sounds like this may not be a problem.
I hope this helps. Let me know if it doesn't or if you have any other questions. I apologize if you are not using iTunes as the answer I gave you is for iTunes.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
