One appreciable difference is that the soldier does not choose his/ her enemy. Congress does that (at least, according to the Constitution - in reality, I'm not sure they do too much of the shot-calling). Assuming that a society wants a standing Army for the purpose of self-defense, the soldier is providing a much-needed service by joining.
If the soldier's country then sends him/ her to fight an unjust war, that is not the fault of the soldier. True, the soldier could refuse, but I don't think most civilians appreciate what kind of a sacrifice that really is. Technically, in a time of war, refusing a legal order to deploy could be punished as treason - conceivably with a death sentence.
In reality, it will probably mean a minimum of 1 year in jail, probably in some unsavory place like Ft. Leavenworth, followed by a dishonorable discharge. Those with a dishonorable discharge lose many rights as citizens and find it almost impossible to find a job.
It is not a sacrifice a reasonable person could demand of someone else. That is a personal decision that must be made by the soldier. If you think it's such an unmitigated evil, then you need to look at your options.
You can try to convince US citizens to disband the military entirely, you can try to protest war, you can try to punish politicians who engage the armed forces in acts of aggression. Since some have tried all this and failed, I can only conclude that the guilty party is the US politicians who sanction war, and their constituents who sanction war. Ultimately, I do not think it is fair to ask for an army for national self-defense, and then blame those who serve for that purpose if their country sends them into an unjust war.
It depends on who they're assassinating. I believe it just has to do with the reputation of the title. Soldiers defend our nation against evil and are praised for it.
We would not be the great nation we are today were in not for our soldiers. The civilians that are killed die because the terrorists hide among innocent people and the soldiers are only trying to protect themselves and don't know until it's too late. You really need to stop this liberal crap of "soldiers are bad."
What do you expect to do? Hold hands with Bin Laden and sing KumbyYah? Get a grip.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
