FRUGAL POPULARITY.... with food prices soaring alongside high energy and fuel... Americans are cutting back on favs...? in many news reports now... there's talk of food prices taking obvious price hikes along with energy costs and fuel prices.... some people are using public transportation on weekends to commute to work... others are cutting back on visiting loved ones in neighboring city from weekly to once a month... there's even reports of consumers tightening their belts when it comes to their favorite past times and little luxuries...i.e. Going to movies... they are staying at home renting them instead... by passing the $4.00 cup of coffee... $2.00 enhanced water for tap... more home cooked meals... making their own clothing...etc.i always cook home cooked meals... grind my own beef... enhance my own coffees, take public transportation in lieu of fuel prices... .. but I still enjoy my enhanced waters..i wait for the best grocery deals in the ads... use coupons...buy in bulk and frequent the local $.99 store...;-DIf the economy should improve... will consumers remain frugal? WYT?

I have noticed in my household alone that we are cutting back on alot of things. We very rarely go out to dinner, which wasn't a big thing before but we would occassionally order a pizza from the convienient store down the street. We haven't done this in over a month.
We sit in the dark during the evenings with candles burning and night lights lit. Our furnace has been lowered for the past 3 winter seasons. We will sit with sweatshirts on and wrapped in a blanket.
When I go shopping and I see an extra item that I would either like to try or rarely buy I alway look to see if it is on sale. I snip coupons regularly and watch as the total of the grocery bill goes down. We also have cut WAY back on visiting.
I now feel like a ground hog, or in total hybernation. Now the only time I see friends is at the super market! I call and talk with them weekly as it is not a toll call.
Now that everyone is used to being frugal I think that once the economy bounces back, people may be more careful on their spending. The money saved sure piles up in the savings account or helps to keep up with the high expenses. You are frugal - that's to be admired. My family hasn't cut back on much yet. With the latest gas hikes, we will probably cut out going so many places.
We will settle for the movie on-demand instead of going out to the movies. I don't think Americans will remain frugal. Here in Texas the demand for SUVs hasn't even dipped that much.
Cutting back is all relative.
Best Be Prepared than Not I have noticed increase in prices and repackaging at the market. Recently, I started to stock up on pricey products that we use often and weighted items. As a consumer at the grocery store, this is what I've noticed: a) Toilet paper is thinner.
B) Ice cream is not a full gallon, but we pay the same price. C) Lots of plastic and glass bottles have concave bottoms. It lessens the amount of product.
Arrowhead made its sides concave and said it was for easier handling. D) My dog bones went up $5 from $3. E) My daughter noticed Target prices have increased.
F) Detergent is now called 2X, smaller packaging. There is no noticeable difference from regular to 2X. G) Paper goods have jumped and that was predicted two months ago.
H) Environmentalist would like to rid the store of cut out plastic bags and paper only. Okay, then do we cut down more trees? That's all I can think of for now.
Lately, I look for clearance meats and put it the freezer. Our Vons has great clearance meats, pork chops, steaks, ribs, lamb, and etc. I think prices are going to get worse when we are in blown recession. Questions: Say, our economy becomes stable, will the manufactures drop prices?
Don't get me on the subject illegal immigration. When Bush passes out funds to us, will we buy China's products and kick up its fast growing economy? Get This!
President Bush didn't even know that gas was up to $4. He said, he didn't know that. He really looked stumped WHAT?
I'm sorry this is so long, but I believe what I have written should be important to all Americans.
We were by looking at your list always frugal... We live in Germany were prices are soaring through the atmosphere forcing a lot of us to shop at the military stores, don't get me wrong they are good places and because of the overseas status tax free. It's the local economy where purchasing used to be cheap, we now pay $1.55 for 1 Euro the local currency. The one area were one has no choice to be frugal is rent, phone, utilities.
I have coworkers with rent of 700 Euros that exchanges to $1,166 dollars for a two bed room! I drive a Ford 150 V8, needless to say driving to and from work only, shopping and that's it! We are sort of lucky when it come to our phone, Internet and cell services.
Normally 45.95 Euros monthly with exchange rate $85. The good deal to this is flat rate, connection to broadband unlimited, time logged on unlimited, local calls unlimited, and cell phones unlimited! We still win in this area even if prices are soaring!
With messenger or skype unlimited contact with family in the states, very important if I don't want my Mom sending the Red cross, Marines, CIA and any other agency you can think of to ensure I'm still alive and call her immediately! LOL We no longer go out! We have always cooked, washed, ironed any house chores is shared by both of us.
We use candle light instead of electricity, heat is only on short periods of time ( we ware socks, extra shirt, or robes anything to help keep warm) we do have the the new light bulbs but we save even more with candles and they have a good side our place smells really great! We have no dishwasher ours is done manually! We have always used coupons saving normally 11-16% off the shopping bill monthly, there is by shopping several item I absolutely will not give up, pizza and gotta have my M&M's!
The planting season is not far now and our garden will give us our salad through the summer, and frozen beans, zucchini, carrots, blackberries, raspberries, currents, broccoli, cauliflower and others. From many of the berries the wife makes jelly. I around the end of Sept.
Gather wild hazel nuts, walnuts. And in Oct. Or around there it depends on when they start falling, chestnuts.
The local farmers usually leave lots of potatoes and onions behind after harvest and we can usually get several large baskets of these by going behind the farmer! Don't cringe ladies but my wife has reduced visits to the hair dresser to every other month or so and I normally for a crew cut every three months! The one area where we refuse to cut expenses are our kids, Cat, Parrots and Parakeets, they are short no needs and are generally spoiled!
Never before has comparison shopping been so important as the present, combing papers, internet for the cheapest places downtown when purchasing at the military stores are limited in certain areas! SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE! Sources: Personal Experience .
Ground beef is a tricky thing. The pros have tools to make sure they're getting the right amount of fat in there with fatty chunks and dry, gristly chunks you can't buy. They also use scraps of meat that they couldn't sell otherwise, bringing down the cost.
There are some advantages to grinding meat at home (like far, far less chance of E. Coli), but I wasn't aware that cost was one of them. Good on ya for doing it.(And no, consumers won't remain frugal.
They never do. ) .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
