2 Just another thought... I know a chihuahua/terrier mix with cyclical hair loss problems (not related to diet) but more likely (according to her vet) to the "hairless" gene kicking on and off. Good luck with the diet; I can't help there as Petey is on Canine WD to reduce bladder stones so we don't get to experiment at all! .
Lostmymarbles replied to post #1: 3 He said going to Science Diet Maintenance was ok. But that is high in protein. I want to stay lower than it is.
She has been on LD, which is 17-18%. It is best to not go over 21-22% Even if she is not displaying clinical signs or symptoms of her MVD, I don't want to *wait* till she does. They only do so if there is damage.
Damage that can't be reversed. Why wait to cause damage before doing something. If feeding lower will keep it in check, then that is how I want to go.
Angrycanadian replied to post #1: 4 Sadly, most vetrinarians know very little about nutrition. Most of what they know about nutrition comes from events sponsered by the large pet food companies, and they also make a lot of money selling prescription foods retail. Anyone who can find a vet who is trained in vetrinary nutrition is lucky!
I love my vet- he is a great doctor, but he is zero help when it comes to picking out foods.
When my pets (dogs or cats) start having problems with diets sometimes it is easier to hit the baby food isle and get few jars of protein. Lamb, beef, turkey, chicken etc. Cook some zuchini, and barley (for roughage- gentle in their digestive system just as for the geriatric human population), or rice and mix with a little protein. A little olive oil does wonder for the fur.
If you notice a little constipation add a little pumpkin paste (get a can from the baking isle- freeze the rest). Read to find out what veggies are OK for dogs and prepare a mush adding the protein from baby food. If you come up with an ideal mix, prepare a batch, place it in an ice cube tray and when frozen transfer to a bag.
One or two cubes might be a meal. I did that with my kids when they were little when I prepared their baby food. Another idea is to prepare or buy ready chicken/vegetable broth and mix a little brown rice in it adding the baby food at the end.
To tell you the truth I always wonder what they mix in the prepared foods. All the chemicals used as "preservative". We have two cats now.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
