One of the causes of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is the lack of sunshine in the winter months. For some people, this lack of sunshine causes a drop in serotonin levels which can make them feel depressed. You can treat Seasonal Affective Disorder by doing things at home to raise your serotonin levels.
Eating foods rich in carbohydrates (pasta, bread, pretzels) can increase your level of serotonin. You can also purchase bulbs that mimic natural sunlight and sit in front of lamps lit with them for a few hours a day to give your body light exposure to raise your serotonin levels. If you spend some time in front of artificial sunlight every day during the winter, you may be able to trick your brain into thinking it is still summertime and keep your SAD symptoms at bay.
From WebMD. Com -quote One theory is that reduced sunlight during fall and winter leads to reduced production of serotonin in the the brain…. Because foods high in carbohydrates (chips, pretzels, cookies) boost serotonin, it is thought that they have a calming, soothing affect on the body and mind.
