Have we as a society have evolved to the point that "win at all costs" trumps "truth and justice"?

The term "evolve" seems to suggest improvement. That is,the term seems to suggest that something that was once lesser has became greater."Win at all costs" seems to depict the worst of society; while "truth and justice" seems to suggest the best of society. Darwinists would say that survival of the fittest has been the way of nature and natural selection, but that society is steadily improving in all aspects of life.

From their point of view, human beings may be prone towards selfish ambition, but gradually over time humankind is growing closer towards a more cooperative state. Christians in one sense agree that human beings are prone towards selfish ambition, but that under the auspices of God that ambition can be corralled for the good of society. Christians also believe that over time human's will choose more and more to ignore God and his will with the results that society will become worse rather than better.

So, simply put, Darwinists believe humankind is steadily (even if imperceptively) getting better, instituting its own utopia over eons of time; while Christians believe that society in more cases than not are rejecting God and getting worse over time. This is especially what we see in the United States which was largely founded on Christian principles. But never, since the US began have those principles been universely upheld and citizens (both Christians and non-Christians) still act in selfish ways.

Moreover, we see relative morality or situational ethics becoming more of the norm which of course waters down or eliminates the propensity of truth and justice. Either way, evolution gives the sense that society is getting better and that humans can and will negotiate a better tomorrow. Thus, a society shunning truth and justice for win at all costs would be the opposite or de-evolution, denigration, or moral erosion.

Because of the picture of the Marine I suppose you are looking for a military related answer. I hope you - the poster of this question - are not involved in a situation where this issue is some how related to the young man in the picture. "Winning" without regard to cost is viewed by many people who cause this to be an issue at all to be, in fact, done in the pursuit of truth and justice.

There are so many people who preform jobs that result in struggles of conscience with this issue and some how they work their way through it. Those of us watching from the side lines have to do the same in a more esoterically way.

I had not known anything about this story, but my daughter is a Marine and my son soon to be as well. But unfortunately society today that is suppose to be civilized seems more uncivilized then ever to me. Anymore it seems to have become a country of taking what you want and lying to cover it up.It doesn't matter whom you hurt or to what extent as long as it turns out good for you.

It is truly sad, as this country used to uphold things like honor, truth, and integrity.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
