First of all, Collections are not pointless. They may seem that way to someone who does not collect anything, but to the collector those collections are often extensions of themselves. I have always been interested in coins, and have travelled extensively so I have some coins in my collection that most people would not see on a regular basis.
When my daughter was born, I actually put together a collection of coins from the year she was born & got hooked doing a collection for everyone in my family for each year they were born. It's kinda interesting to go back and see how the coinage has changed, and who knows, maybe when I die these collections may have some value for someone else in the future. When I was a kid I used to collect Baseball cards & now I wish that I had kept them.
Most likely, they just got thrown out. I also started a stamp collection. I would save my $ just to get specialized sheets of stamps, and I would spend hours at the library(before computers, imagine that)just learning as much as I could on the history of the stamp, the person or place pictured, etc. I still love learning about History today.
I think people who collect things are people with a natural inclination for curiosity, for learning. They tend to be people that care about details, specifics. Most collectors make excellent teachers, even if it is only in that one subject that they know the most about.
I don't know of anyone who is a Collector, that does not show off their collection to someone. What do people do when they show off something? They tell others about it...they discuss how they got it, maybe how much it cost, how many more of "it" they have, how long they have been collecting...etc. People who fall into the catagory as being a Collector are Observers, Watchers for that item that has some type of value.
I believe that Collectors are a very unique breed of people. Look around at people that collect items(be it art, people,$,stuff)and see how they live, who they know, what they do with their lives. Now look at the people who do not collect anything or worse, look down upon those of us who do.
Which group of people are the real caretakers of Human History...the Collectors or the Non-Collectors...interesting concept, eh? GuardDog.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
