I'm only 54 and both of my knees have severe arthritis; bone-on-bone. While walking my dog today, I realized that I really should have this done as each step is painful. I'm scared and don't know if I can go through it.
The orthopedist told me that I should only do 10 minutes of exercise a day. Boy oh boy. It's depressing. I'd love your opinion, please.
I'm about 20 pounds overweight due to this predicament and realize that that adds to the picture, as well. Asked by quandryhere 55 months ago Similar questions: knee replacement surgery glad 54 knees Health.

My mom had two knee replacements! Her's were bone on bone too! She had them several months apart, which I suggest.
You want to be able to at least walk on one okay leg. She is 72 yrs. Old and much more overweight than you, with hip problems too.
Here's the trouble she had, though. After the first one, she developed a blood clot that was working it's way up to her heart. She just felt so ill a couple of days after and was real dizzy.
She was hospitalized again quickly, she could have died. However, they put a filter screen of some sort inside her to filter out blood clots, so they did not get to her heart. Ask your doc.
About that first, please. My sister-in-law is a nurse and she was the one who told her to ask her doc. About it!
It will have to be removed within a year, so make sure that both knees are done before that! It really scared her and the fam. The next surgery went with flying colors and she feels soo much better.
Long recovery, so allow time to be off your feet. You will need rehab, see if your insurance will pay for someone to come to your house and do it, as my Mom did. All in all, I say "Go for it!"
If my Mom did at 72 and very overweight, you should pull through nicely, and she said it was totally worth the pain. She feels so much better now. Do it while you are still young, so you can enjoy more of your life!
Best wishes and I hope I've helped! Be brave, young man! Sources: Mom went through it!

Knee surgery I've not had the surgery, but several members of my family have. And I will be honest with you: it's hard and it's painful while it's still healing. But, when it's healed, you will wonder why you waited so long for it to be done!
That's what I've heard again and again from my relatives. My husband at 47 had a hip replaced last fall. Like you, he was bone on bone and in alot of pain all the time.
When he realized that he couldn't competently do his job as a police officer, he knew he had to get it done. He hasn't regretted it at all. To enjoy a better quality of life, relatively pain free, makes it all worth it.
The hip replacement is MUCH easier to recover from than knees, though. Before his surgery, I did a lot of online research, and came across this really helpful forum that deals with all kinds of bone and joint issues: forums.delphiforums.com/onourfeet/start what's nice about it is that you can ask questions of people who are going through the same thing as you. Or just read what they've written about it all.

My husband had a knee replacement last year. He was only 44. He had been on crutches for two years!
It all started when he had an arthroscopy for a torn meniscus and then his knee got infected. It ate through the bone, which essentially put him bone on bone at a much earlier age than was probably going to happen. Anyway, he was in severe pain, on several pain medications, and he just couldn't take it any longer.
He finally had a knee replacement done and could walk and run again, without pain. It still would ache a little on rainy days, but he could live with that pain as compared to the excruciating pain he had been in. I wanted to throw the crutches away - he had worn through three sets of pads on the bottoms and it limited him so much.
Before my husband had the surgery, however, he had gone to a few orthopedic surgeons to get their opinions. He had many x-rays and MRIs, and had gone to physical therapy. All the docs were in agreement - even though he was young, a knee replacement was probably the only thing that was going to relieve his pain (medicine is not an exact science, and there was no guarantee that his knee would feel better - but they felt like it could not feel worse).
You're right when you say that not being able to exercise and depression leads to the weight gain and hence, more knee pain. Has the doctor tried Synvisc injections? Or steroid injections?
Sometimes that helps, although only for short term. My husband was very scared, and so was I, but it was the best thing he could have done. He may have to have another one done at some point in the next 15 to 20 years, and maybe another one after that.
However, he couldn't wait and I'm glad he didn't. It was very difficult for me watching him in pain and not being able to do anything about it. Recovery is different for everyone, but I would say by eight weeks he was up and about, off of pain medications and his range of motion of the knee was unremarkable.
Physical therapy was very important during this time, and he stuck with it. Good luck with whatever you choose, naturallycurious. If you have any other questions, I can ask my husband and get back to you.

Losing weight will greatly impact your quality of life, especially if you have an existing knee condition. TREATING KNEE ARTHRITIS WITHOUT SURGERY 1. Should you limit your activities?
- If you have knee arthritis, the more you walk the more the knee will hurt. In time, running, tennis, golf and eventually even walking may become impossible. You can minimize the pain by simply cutting back on activities which seem to aggravate the knee.
Whenever possible, use an elevator (or an escalator) instead of stairs, and avoid long walks that leave you in pain. However, “saving the joint” by becoming totally sedentary will not slow down the arthritis. Therefore it is recommended that you remain as active as your pain will comfortably allow.
A reported study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, in 1992 suggests that people with hip arthritis who force themselves to remain active may do better in the long run than those who “baby” themselves. Also, being totally sedentary leads to a loss of muscle and bone strength. If you feel that you really need it, ask Dr. Huddleston’s staff to arrange for a handicapped parking sign for your car, but you are better off parking further away and forcing yourself to walk!2.
A cane has been known since pre-biblical times to be an effective pain-reliever for knee arthritis. Unfortunately most people today are too vain to use one! Two important facts about canes: 1).
Hold the cane in the opposite hand (yes, the opposite hand) from the side with the knee problem and: 2). The cane should be the correct height. Any medical supply company that sells you a cane will adjust it to the correct length.
The physical therapy department at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute can also adjust the length for you if needed. 3. Weight loss will probably decrease your pain if you are greatly overweight.
But weight reduction alone is unlikely to completely relieve the pain. Obesity also makes the knee operation more difficult, and complications occur more frequently in overweight people.Dr. Huddleston realizes that it can be very difficult to lose weight when you are not very active because of your knee pain. Do the best you can!4.
Gold injections and methotrexate may be useful in rheumatoid arthritis. The treatment is complex and usually only given under the supervision of a rheumatologist.5. Cortisone injection.
The symptoms of mild and moderate degrees of arthritis frequently improve with the injection of cortisone into the joint. This is not recommended more than once every two to three months or so if it works. The amount needed is very small and side effects are rare or minor.
The more advanced the arthritic damage the less likely is Cortisone to be beneficial.6. Knee braces generally have not been found to be very helpful for knee arthritis, but recently special braces and wedged shoes have been shown to be helpful in some cases. An ace bandage may help to control swelling of the joint and gives some psychological benefit as well.
