Help! My 16 month old son is still not sleeping through the night! The truth is I believe he never has the chance to learn to sleep through the night since he started to teeth very early which woke him up and he had so many ear infections- nursing him was the only thing that helped with the pain... anyway he wakes up at 3/3:30 every morning no matter what.

I thought that he would start to sleep better now that he got the tubes in his ears but he still wakes up out of habit. How do I teach him not to wake up? I try not to nurse him but then he just screams and screams which keep all of us awake.

We are so beyond sleep deprived... will letting him "scream it out" really work- it is totally heartbreaking to hear him scream but we are at our wits end! Any suggestions? Personal experiences?

You may not want to hear this, but some children don't sleep through the night until after 2 years old. Since he started teething early he may be cutting his 2 year old molars. Some things I tried is giving a snack before bed, my daughter would wake up hungry.

If he is teething you can try teething tablets during the day, and some infants tylenol at bedtime. I had a problem letting her cry it out. She wouldn't go to sleep she'd just make herself sick.

She is over two now and sleeping through the night. We did find a stuffed animal and a favorite blanket that she has to have in order to sleep. We tried several until we found this one stuffed animal and we pack it for every trip.

Mostly we just stayed sleep deprived and waited it out. I'm guessing you have tried putting him to bed later, we also don't let her nap after 3pm. Mostly we just had to wait it out.It does pass and eventually he will sleep through the night.

I would try a white noise machine they have soothing sounds to help him sleep. These are specially made for babies. sleepwellbaby.com/Baby-Sleep-Aids-s/118.htm this one is also lavender scented.

You can also try a pacifier instead of nursing, that way he doesn't need you to be there to fall back to sleep. If he likes to hear you sing then you can try singing and massaging him in his crib and see if that sooths him enough to go back sleep. My son had many ear infections. I wish I had know he was celiac. Dairy and gluten grains hurt him tremendously.. but I didn't know what the problem was.

Not eating dairy or gluten grains heals their gut lining, stops infections etc. MY son now knows icecream (dairy and fat) give him ear infections fast even at age 21. He is still not doing the celiac diet since he is in the military..... but he just got another ear infection and is watching what he eats better. LDN blocks celiac but it can't do it totally and they would be alittle older to use this.

The diet works great and it is worth it to get a good nights sleep.

Please don't let him cry it out! Consider Co-sleeping, or just be patient NewMom -- Oh, I feel your pain! And congrats on breastfeeding through until 16 months. My daughter is exactly that age as well (Thanksgivng baby) and she too is still nursing every 2 to 3 hours at night.

It gets incredibly frustrating sometimes, and I am definitely suffering for sleep (hence replying at 3:30 am! ). But it IS temporary.

He's been through a lot...he really NEEDS his mama..there's no getting around it. You've been through a lot of stress with the tubes, too... that's really young to have to do that. And odd for a breastfed baby to have so many ear infections!

The best thing to remember is that it really, really won't last forever, even though it feels like it now. The best way to get some sleep in the meantime is to just bring him into bed with you once you go to sleep. Despite what some may say, it will NOT condemn you to a lifetime of sleep problems.

Quite the opposite. Fighting his needs, on the other hand, will. Right now your baby needs you and your milk.

That won't always be the case, as hard as it is to imagine. My first didn't sleep through the night until 15 months. Then magically, one night, she was ready, and it started to stretch out until she was sleeping 7-7, and has done it ever since.

They do it when they are ready, and not a second before. Someone wise told me once, you can't MAKE a baby eat, sleep, or poop. They do it when and where they want.

You can try, but as frustrating as it is, it's simply not your decision. The best you can do is create and environment and situation that will facilitate it for them....it sounds like for your son, for now, that needs to be with you. At 16 months, he understands much spoken language. Explain to him that only babies need to eat in the middle of the night. And that a big 18 month old will not have to.

Explain this to him every night before he goes to bed, and every night when he wakes up for feeding. Do this for about 2 months and then have a family party for his being 18 months old. He will want a feeding that night at 3:00.

Let him cuddle, but no feeding. Remind him how proud you are that he is a big boy, how he is now 18 months old and doesn't NEED feeding during the night. He will go back to sleep and once you've broken the eating habit, he will start to sleep.

If he doesn't make a big deal about how BIG boys wake up in the night, but then go back to sleep by themselves. All in all, I wouldn't worry too much. I bet he breaks the habit by the time he goes to college... That's what my pediatrician said to me when we had any of these kind of problems, and you know what.My kids are pretty much out of all of it, and they are in 2nd grade...
