I would say that I am very cynical these days. When someone phones me from a call centre or even a firm that I sometimes deal with as soon as I hear the words, "How are you today, Sir"? I know that they want to sell me something.
I have won scores of lottery prices, all I have to do is send them x number of pounds handling fee.! So they are all FIB filed in bin. Even BOGOF's in supermarkets do not often tempt me, at least not until I have done the maths. Buying one and getting one free to my mind means that I am probably paying more for the first item.
About the only scheme that I have bought into is the one where my newspaper, gives me a £5 reward card or voucher each month to spend in a supermarket or wherever, and even then I think that in order for them to do that, they must be charging me too much for my newspaper in the first place! I think that I have inherited my Grandfather's cynicism he always said, whatever you read in the papers lad be careful; about the only thing that you can trust is the date, but then always check it against your calender.
I am allot more cynical these days then I used to be. I used to walk around wearing rose colored glasses. My husband, he is a good soul but such a born cynic, it has rubbed off on me I think.
My mother used to say, that I wore my heart on my sleeve, I had 2 older sisters that would watch my back for me as a kid so I could afford to let my guard down. These days it seems there are many more desperate people who will do and say anything to get something out of you. We all need to double check our sources now.
That being said, I totally trust people that are close to me and get a bit upset when their trust doesn't always pan out.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
