I've been trying to teach my seven year old nephew how to read better. Any good books on how to teach kids to read? Okay, I've been trying to teach my nephew how to improve his reading skills.

He has done Hooked on Phonics, but he gets bored and stops paying attention...I've bought one book on how to teach a child to read in 1000 lessons, it helped a little. I'm looking for great books that will help me help him to read with ease. Even a program that is exciting, and will keep his attention would be great.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated:) Thank you :) Asked by Neversleepsawink 43 months ago Similar questions: teach year nephew read books kids Education & Reference.

Reading is Good for You! Read to him while he is sitting beside you so he can see the words. Also talk to him about the picture on the cover and what he thinks the story might be about based on the picture.

Ask him questions such as, "what do you think will happen next? " What character do you like/dislike? " etc... and have him retell the story after you read it together.

TALK with him about the story, just as you talk about movies or TV shows after you watch them. Having a relaxed conversation around the story, rather than completing worksheets or skill and drill , will help him be more confident and secure and eventually begin to attempt to read more by himself. Read more than books; read poems, songs, rhymes, chants, newspapers, comics, road signs, store signs, food labels, recipes, etc... Play word games such as Hangman, Scrabble Jr, Boggle, and Apples to Apples Jr. A series of books that are specifically designed to be read aloud by one stronger reader (such as a parent, older sibling, or more proficient reader) and a younger reader together are the You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You.. books.

There is a fairy tale, scary and short stories version. My daughter enjoys reading these books with me because the stories are short, fun, lively and by us taking turns reading the lines, we share the responsibility of reading. The most important thing is that your nephew LIKES reading and that reading is an enjoyable experience for him..... not stressful.

A book that I have used with teacher assistants and parents is titled: Reading Magic by Mem Fox. This is probably not the type of book you mention in your question, but I think you will find it extremely helpful. The most important thing is to know that there is absolutely no single reading program on the market now, in the past or ever will be that can "teach" a child to read.

Each child is different; and each child’s reading process is different. Just as your questions says.... Hooked on Phonics bored him, but it has worked for some children, SRA helps some, but doesn’t work for all. Stack about three pages of blank paper together, fold them in half, staple them down the side of the fold and help him as he writes his own books. As he works through trying to sound out, use known words to write unknown words, use sight words and think about the meaning of what he is trying to say, he will learn about word patterns, sounds, letters, sense of story, etc... Reading and writing are reciprocal, that means if we can write it, we can read it and vice versa.

A free website that I use with first graders is http://www.starfall.com/ . S site will not teach him to read, but will provide interactive practice in phonics and spelling patters, rhyming and sight words. Click on the "learn to read" section.

Here is my advice: First of all, boys generally do not develop strong reading skills as quickly as girls. So compare him to boys of his age - not to girls. He may just be a late bloomer.

Try to accept that and don't allow yourself to be drawn into the "learning disability" trap. Second, boys have distinctly different reading taste than girls, so look for books HE will like. Take him to book stores and let him choose books he is interested in.

Use some of the guide books below to get ideas for good books for him. Boys especially like books that explain or illustrate how to do things. This should be encouraged and hopefully you will help him do some projects.

Make something with him, or if you read about cowboys, then act out a scene from the book. Don't under estimate the power of reading to him. If he is not a strong reader for a particular book just read it to him, or take turns reading.

Developing a love for good stories and having the opportunity to share your ideas and values is wonderful. In the effort to get him reading, don't skip over this experience. See if your library has it and just thumb through it for ideas..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
