This could be a few things but I would check the cabling first For the sake of troubleshooting make sure you are plugging the DVD player directly into the TV and not daisy chaining it through another device like a VCR. The first thing I would check is the cabling. I assume you're using a standard RCA cable with 3 connectors on each side (white, red and yellow).

The yellow connector is for video. The white and red connectors are for stereo audio. Make sure the cable is attached correctly to both the TV and DVD, paying special attention to the yellow part of the cable since you're having video problems.
