How dangerous is it to run into animals on the road? Do animals have a chance?

I know that deer can freeze up in the glare of headlights. How can it be prevented? I think some have attempted to build overhead passes for the animals, not sure if that's the answer.

Can be dangerous it depends on the deer. Some deer freeze, many more are panicky, and try to jump ahead of you and cross the road. I’ve seen a vid where a deer tried to jump the entire car when they saw the headlights coming.

I don’t know about overpasses, but there are simpler solutions. Take the case of toads and other amphibians. Every year, toads around the world must migrate to the nearest lake to URL1 many cases there are roads they have to cross, and every year toads get killed attempting them.

Solution? Some local governments, such as nottingham england, and others in the uk, have simply closed certain roads to car traffic in order to give the frogs a chance. This works for some if the road isn’t heavily travelled.

But for places where there are many cars and traffic, such as in oregon. They have built culverts and drainage pipes underneath some roads. As for deer, I don’t think many would support building overpasses for deer. First, the deer has to learn how to use it, and not just blindly run across the road like animals.

Good luck in that. Second, many people think there are already too many deer, and it would be a waste of taxpayer money Video deer gets hit by race car and is sent 50 feet into the air Video deer gets hit by cop car Video deer hit by taxi .

Sometimes it can't be avoided. I live in the middle of a national forest, and it is just a fact of life that when wild animals and humans occupy the same area, there will be accidents. In the past couple of years, my daughter has hit both a coyote and a deer while driving home on a local highway, both in almost the same spot.

The coyote actually ran into the side of her car. That location is the site of our city's sewage treatment plant, and we believe that the animals are drawn to that particular spot by the presence of water. (This is the high desert.) A few weeks after she hit the deer, we all noticed a dead bear by the road in almost the same place.

That was a first for us, as adult bears don't tend to come so close to human activity. For our part, we are just grateful that my daughter and granddaughter weren't injured in those accidents. Perhaps our city could have chosen a more remote place for their sewage treatment plant.

The automobile is not a natural predator. So animals survival instincts do not adequately protect them from us. When you add our burgeoning population to that statistic, you have a recipe for slaughter.

We attempt various things to reduce the bloodshed, with varying results. As for how dangerous it is, more often than not, when a car hits a wild animal, the animal dies. Depending on the animal, the car also sustains serious damage.

With a larger animal, the drivers' lives are also endangered. I am afraid the only remedy for this is a long term process of allowing nature to find its own balance. Eventually, natural selection will weed out the animals that have a habit of crossing roads, and reduce the wildlife population sufficiently to reduce collisions.

We can continue our efforts at making safe crossings, and improve the odds, but only the natural process will reach a stable point. Safety measures Using a safety system like ABS is ideal if you will be driving at night. You can also install fog lights and all terrain tires if you are really worried about hitting a deer.
