I have heard running a cycle with vinegar will freshen it up - but that's based upon the assumption that the smell isactually coming from inside the washing machine.

There is a reservoir of water that doesn't easily get swapped out and emptied after a load is run. Run the washing machine empty with a clutch of bleach. That way, it should replace most of the water in that reservoir and sterilize the rest..

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
