Should be easy First, here is your Dell Dimension Support manual: support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/d... This shows you (basically) how to put a new drive in. Follow the instructions for the CD but don't take the front plate off to expose the drive. Before you do anything, make sure you have a free bay in the system to put the drive.

If you don't have room in the box. You can use an external drive and connect it via the usb port. If you do have room and want to install the drive in the box here are some generic instructions.

According to the manual, your system uses ATA (PATA) hard disk drives. You can buy one from a number of manufacturers like Maxtor, Seagate, or Western Digital. I personally like Seagate drives because you get a 5 year warranty.

Just follow the typically complete instructions that come with the drive and you will be fine. Make sure that your get the jumper setting correct for your system. If the drive already installed is set to Master, make the new drive the slave.

If the old drive is CS (cable select) make the new one CS. Don't be surprised if you get a BIOS 'error' message when you reboot after the installation. It is just the BIOS seeing the new drive and asking you to verify it.

Finally, my personal preference is to get an external drive. It costs just a few $$ more but you don't have to open the case or play with jumpers. It's also easy to backup several machines or to move your data to a new machine.

Most likely ATA/IDE hard drives I believe Dell dimension 2400 still uses ATA / IDE hard drives instead of the newer SATA ones. So when you look for a hard drive, get something that says Ultra ATA, or just ATA, or IDE, but stay away from anything that says SATA, or serial ATA. Open up your box, affix your hard drive to the cage using the screws.

Your existing hard drive should serve as an excellent example. Just put your new drive right below it. Before you do it, make sure the jumper on your new hard drive is set properly.

The harddrive should have either a printed label or etched metal that tells you which pins to shun. Since you said "slave", either the slave, or the CS (cable select) is fine, but stay away from "master" setting. After you affix the harddrive, plug in the IDE cable.

A normal IDE able should have a spare plug (slave connector) an inch or two from the master connector, and the master connector should already be plugged into your existing harddrive. Should push the slave connector into the IDE slot of your new drive, and then find a spare molex power connector and plug that to the new drive. If you don't have a spare molex connector, you can always go to froogle.com and find molex Y splitters.

Leave your box open, plug in the power and everything, boot up your computer, and assuming you use windows, go to administrative tools -> computer management -> disk management, and you should see your new drive... now you need to partition it and format it, so it will show up in your list of drives. You can do both from the disk management. Once you have done that and know everything was set up correctly.

Power off the computer and unplug the power cable. Then close the box. There you have it.

Dell Dimension 2400 uses Parallel ATA (PATA) internally -- decent choice below. For your computer there are any number of drives available, so long as you stay with Parallel ATA drives, which is what you currently have as your primary drive installed now. For this type of hard drive Newegg.com has a 250 GB Seagate drive available now for about $65.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 "Perpendicular Recording" ST3250820A 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM Their link for this drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148141 This drive would offer good performance and be well matched for your computer. Installations is fairly "plug and play". Basically you'll make sure the jumper is set to "Cable Select" (there's only one jumper on this drive) install in an open slot near your existing drive, attach the spare power connector, and plug it in to the only open connector on the cable that already connects to your other drive (it'll be in the middle with one end on the motherboard and the other end on your existing hard disk).

The BIOS will automatically recognize it when you boot. Format and you're good to go. Hope that helps!

May be difficult .. Willie, the Dimension 2400 machines I've seen don't have a space in them for another hard disk. Although you could insulate the bottom of the case a let a disk drive just lay there (keep in mind it doesn't get ventilation down there... You'll need a new 80-pin ribb0n cable, since a standard Dell doesn't have a spare connector on the cable, and I'd recommend the 24" cable. See newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82... for a cable.

The drive on the end of the cable is usually the boot drive, and set the jumpers on both drives for either Cable Select, or for Master (boot drive) and Slave (the one in the middle...) Most Dell power supplies have enough power to power another drive, although it might get iffy with a large drive. The Dell Supplies are not standard supplies, so you can't just pick up another one if need be, probably would have to come from Dell. You'll be looking for an IDE drive, probably a 120 Gb or so... If you need a really big disk, it may require more power. My 0.02.. Good luck!

I know what your problem is I have run into this problem with my old dimension 2400. First you need a IDE interface harddisk and then you have to change jumper setting son the hard drives. Changing the jumpers isnt reccomended DIY but it can be done.

I cant full explain it to you here so here is the link for a good explination to do it. dansdata.com/sbs27.htm" rel="nofollow">dansdata.com/sbs27.htm I tried to put a slave in my dimension 2400 for months till I figured it out that its the jumoers that need to be changed between slave and primary. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
