Ratings services There are ratings services for radio, like there are for TV. They survey folks to find out who they listen to and for how long. Maybe folks keep a diary.

Maybe they estimate the time they spend. I'm not sure of the methodology. So, in the end, it's an estimate of how many folks listen to each station for how long.

The estimate is as good as the methodology makes it -- maybe reliable, maybe not. But stations have nothing else to go on, so they abide by the system, and charge advertising rates according to estimated listenership. So, no, the radio stations don't know for certain who is most listened to, but they do all agree to go along with what the ratings bureau estimates is the most listened-to station.

Estimated by a random sample of the total audience They purchase the information from a company that makes a statistical estimate based on a small sample of the total audience. The listener estimates have a margin of error based on the size of the sample. Arbitron is a radio audience research company in the United States which collects listener data on radio audiences similar to that collected by Nielsen Media Research on television audiences.

Arbitron collects data by selecting a random sample of a population in roughly 100 metros throughout the United States four times a year. An additional 200 markets are surveyed in the Spring and Fall. People in the sample are asked to maintain a written diary describing each radio program listened to.

Each selected household agreeing to participate is provided a diary for each member aged 12 and older for one week, beginning on Thursday and ending the following Wednesday. At the end of the week, the completed diaries are returned to Arbitron by post. After collection, the data is marketed to radio broadcasters, radio networks, cable companies, advertisers, advertising agencies.

Radio stations and radio groups use Arbitron’s local and regional radio ratings services to demonstrate the value of their audience to advertisers. Advertising agencies and marketers use Arbitron’s radio ratings service to plan more effective radio buys and target consumers more precisely. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbitron supergrover's Recommendations Arbitron Radio Market Reports Price: $425.00 .

An independent group sends out surveys. I took one a while back. It askes you to track which radio stations you listen to throughout the day.

In the envelope was a $5 bill for my trouble. I filled it out for a week since I only listen to the radio in the car to and from work. It was easy.

The group publishes its data and radio stations use the data in their own advertisements (as you mentioned) and also raise or lower their own commercial air time prices that they sell to advertisers. They probably also hire and fire radio personalities depending on these ratings as well. I hope this helps.
