I think some of the figures posted here are a bit oversimplified. I've researched this topic extensively, the full conclusions can be found here:ratetea.net/topic/caffeine-content-of-te... summary? Tea tends to have much less caffeine than coffee.
The caffeine content of tea is widely variable though, typically 15-75mg per 8oz. Cup. It's impossible to generalize based on whether you're dealing with a black tea, white tea, or green tea however...each of these can be either high, low, or intermediate in caffeine.
What affects the content of tea? The amount of leaf buds used--more leaf buds = more caffeine, more mature leaves = less caffeine. Tea made of twigs and stems is lower in caffeine, and hojicha (roasted green tea) is very low in caffeine.
Also, using more tea leaf and steeping longer results in more caffeine. Coffee? It also depends on the processing, and also on how you brew it.
But this is not my area of expertise...I'm mainly a tea guy! Net/topic/caffeine-content-of-tea/21.
