How do you get the musky smell out of room after a carpet has been cleaned?

My husband used a carpet cleaner in our living room yesterday on a much needed dirty carpet. We kept the windows open, but now there is a dirty, musky, raunchy smell in here.It smells like rotten egg. Whats the easiest way to get that smell out, or will we have to let time take it's course to air out?

Smelly... I too used lots of candles.... When I bought my uncles house it had been empty for a year with all his things still here. I cleaned out the house threw out the beds and replaced the carpet. But I think it was when I painted that the smell seems to vanish.

I painted each room and used lots of candles. I do think the paint helped me. You may want to slap a coat of paint on the walls of that room.

Also I cleaned the house with every product out there but diluted bleach seems to work the best. Wear gloves. If that rug was wet at all you may have mold so where you can you can spray with Tilex mold and mildew cleaner.

This works decent. I use it in my basement after I get water and have a dehumitifier down there. But in the upstairs I think the paint really covered it.

Use Baking Soda Once the carpet is comletely dry, sprinkle a box of baking soda all over the carpet. It is best to do this before going to bed and then cleaning it up in the morning. I did this when I moved into my first apartment, THe carpet stunk!

I had it cleaned and it still smelled, so I just purchased a box of Arm & Hammer baking soda and let it sit overnight. In the morning, I was able to sweep up a lot of the baking soda and used a vacuum to get up the rest. The difference the baking soda made was amazing.

1 Spartan, regarding your answer "Smelly...": Hmmm, if painting this room was that easy..my living room was painted rightbefore we moved in by a lady who did perfessional "sponge painting" (brain fart- forgot the fancy term they have for it)..the walls are beautifully painted with various colors, almost looks like a an antique wallpaper, that has a glaze in/over it...And I also have a beautiful wallpaper border on the top...If I was to paint I'd have to rip the border down, sand the walls and put a poly over it...WAYYYYY to much work...I'd rather buy tonz of candles...Maybe we are just due for a new carpet...

2 My bad I though you had a new carpet. I also sponge painted my room and my daughters with a boarder so I now had much work it is. I did one wall in my bedroom sponge/Glaze and it took me 9 hours.So no of course your shouldn't paint over it!

I wouldn't paint over it and I would have never suggested it if I knew you had just painted. Like I said I was thinking you just moved in and replaced the carpet but the room was still musty. Sorry for taking up a space with a wrong answer.

Well it's spring here in Boston/more like summer so open up those windows and start burning those candles. I like the Baking Soda tip you got. I would definately try that.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
