Old pieces of carpeting or throw rugs can be used in countless ways. Rugs almost never wear out all over. Most of the time, they are only worn in high traffic areas and even a very old carpet will have some places that are like brand new because they were hidden under furniture.
Make use of this great resource all around the house. Start with the obvious. If you have a large carpet that is ruined in some areas, make smaller area rugs with the good spots.
Cut them with a linoleum knife from the underside. Put a ruler or at least draw a line where you want to cut on the back before you cut. It makes it easier to cut straight or evenly.
If the edges are likely to ravel (many types of carpet won't do this) you may want to get some tape in a closely matching color to prevent that. Duct tape now comes in a huge array of colors. Get one that's close to a match and try to keep the tape hidden beneath the carpet fibers.
Make a really snug pet bed with a box or box lid. You can spray paint the ... more.
