My 12 week old puppy chews my rugs and carpet! Help! My 12 week old Dachshund puppy is locked in my utility room at night w/bed, water, toys, and potty pad.
During the night he is chewing my carpet at the door, and when I am not looking he chews at rugs in the house. I am firm, tell him NO, and make a consistent clapping noise to get his attention. Nothing works.
Of course I have only had him a month, but is there a spray or something I can use that would offend him so he won't chew at it? It's always the same spots. Does anyone have suggestions?

Good grief, he's teething! He HAS to chew. That's number one.
Get him some fun things to chew. There are doggy balls with hollow sections inside where you can stuff peanut butter or cheese and let the dog have a wonderful time trying to get to it. When he starts to chew something you don't want him to chew, an "AH!" sound, fairly low toned (loud, but low, in the growling range), will cause him to pause.
Then give him what you want him to chew on. But chew he must right right now. But second, is he getting enough exercise so that he is TIRED by the end of the day?
Third, keep him on a leash with you when you are in the house. That way you will see immediately when he is chewing something he shouldn't. Have an alternative (not food unless you want an obese dog) available for chewing.
"Ah! " and the offering of something else every time. When he accepts what you offer, praise him.
He can't stop chewing at this stage, so it's a matter of WHAT he chews, not IF he chews! YES! My dachshund did the exact same thing...and always in the same spot...That was what aided me and trained him....I coated the spot with POWDERED RED PEPPER....that ended his chewing of carpets within two days...That was ONE MONTH ago and Katonka is doing great at NOT CHEWING.... HOPE THAT ASSISTS..........Red pepper will not cause harm...just a very hot mouth! Blessings.........Annlee Sources: My Experience Recently on this also!

He could be doing this for a number of reasons. The main reason that dogs chew things like carpet is that they don't have anything else to chew, or they are bored. Either one will cause the dog to chew.
If you would like to solve the problem immediately I would recommend getting him a crate. Then when you let him out you have to watch him. If he is still doing this behavior even if he is fully entertained.
Then I would suggest disciplinary actions. However I do NOT believe in telling a dog "NO". You should pink a word or sound that will only be used for discipline.
Think about it... How many times do say no in a given day. It really isn't a word that you want to associate with discipline. If he still isn't responding you need to take action and discipline him physically.
This does NOT mean beat the dog. This means to put the dog into a submissive state showing him that you will dominate him, and passify him if need be. I usually also interject a growl or too.
Even though he is a little cute Dachshund puppy he is still a puppy, which means he is still a dog. If these don't work we always used something called bitter apple to keep the dog from chewing. You can spraw it on the part of the carpet that he chews.

Bitter apple spray, just spray on the rug or wherever as it will not stain. The dog hates the very bitter taste. Used the ointment some time ago on my dog's paws and he hated it!
You can find it at any pet store like petco.
It's a natural behaviour It would be cruel to repress it, like punishing a cat for mewing. Give it an old slipper or a chew toy.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
