How effective is diatomaceous earth at controlling household pests?

Yes, I moved to Hawaii and it is a tropical climate with a lot of bugs. I did expect that, but had hoped to leave scorpions and 6 inch centipedes behind in Tucson. We have now found both in the house!

Trying to find alternatives to using pesticides to keep the bugs out. Asked by SiliconOwl 53 months ago Similar questions: effective diatomaceous earth controlling household pests Science > Animals.

I know this about DE, it is very effective on fleas. The basic principal involved is this: Diatamaceous earth is the remains of diatoms. One celled living creatures, when they die they leave behind a shell.

These shell remains are DE. Fleas do not coagulate their blood. What I am saying is that when fleas are cut, the bleed, and they bleed, and they do no stop because there is no ability to stop the flow.In humans and other animals, our blood has agents which act to slow the flow.

Our blood coagulates. I sprinkled it around and then sweap and vacume. The small amounts in cracks, etc, are enough to work.

I would assume other minute pests would be adversely affected as well, although I doubt it would help much for larger insects. Also please consider if your enviornment is moist as this may limit the long term effectiveness. Focus on sealing all the little openings you can.

Create comfortable/aesthetic landscaping that is not welcoming to the pests. Stop any water sources from the house that draw wildlife..

Not in my yard I had the slug problem from hell when I moved to this house in NJ. I tried that, and it didn't work at all; I was like a crazy person, out there every morning spraying those varmints with anything I could get my hands on, including purple spray paint. It was sad.My slugs could crawl over gravel to get to my hostas, so I didn't really think that DE was going to help, but I tried.

You might have to resort to pesticides, though some of my friends have used mixtures of garlic, chili peppers and water to curb their pests,....

I've been reading up on this... Being in NW Florida...we do have bugs...and they all want to come inside. I'm pretty tired of treating all of the animals, having poison sprayed on the lawn and more poison sprayed throughout the house. From what I've found out so far...the DE that we need to use is FOOD GRADE...not swimming pool or agricultural grade DE.

The microscopic particles of DE actually shred the bugs, cut their shells, damage their bodies. The 'food grade' is so pure that both people and animals can ingest it. It can be rubbed into the coats of pets to rid them of fleas, they can lick it and ingest it...and it will rid them of internal parasites. It is already added to certain 'human' food to prevent bugs from growing in our grain products.

Now, here's the problem I'm having...BUYING it...I finally found a 50 pound bag on the internet, for $30.00...but the UPS shipping was an additional $37.00. Check out internet-grocer.net for more info on prices and shipping. They have small 5 pound bags on other sites..and the shipping isn't too bad on those.

I was hoping to do the pets, the lawn, the foundation and the perimeter of the walls inside of the house. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
