Back then...... 1977 we started the babies on cereal and some fruit at three months of age. My son had reactions with different cereals and only oatmeal and limited fruits in jars (plums, apple sauce, pears and bananas) was tolerated. 1979 my daughter spent the first 10 months on formula, barley cereal and some fruits. At that time it was suggested that we feed them healthy and avoid prepared foods.
When they were about 6 to 8 months old, instead of prepared baby food I would prepare a puree: Beef broth (good piece of lean London Broil) or Chicken Broth (a chicken breast) simmered for 45 minutes Add: 2 Potatoes, Broccoli, Handful of Spinach, few stalks of celery, 1 Onion, a little Garlic, Parsley, touch of salt and Olive oil and cook until the mixture can be made into a mush. If the baby is very young, put it through a sieve. This mixture is placed in ice cube trays and when solid the cubes are placed in bags so every two or three cubes placed in the microwave for a little time is a meal.
Make enough for few weeks. As they get older and can handle denser food you need less pureeing and you can shred the meat or chicken, add couscus, little noodles, rice etc.My babies loved it and as they grew, in the winter time, I turned it into a home made soup that I added medium or large size shell noodles. Now they are in their late 20's early 30's and still come running when I say I am making their soup.
At 4 1/2 months.. I made all the food my boys ate except for the cereals. It's much cheaper and easier than I had expected. Anyway, we started with rice cereal.2 weeks later it was baby oatmeal.
Then 2 weeks later it was pureed peas which they loved. 2 weeks later I gave them pureed carrots, which they hated. The first food that they "needed" teeth for was rice cakes, unsalted.
That was at about 8 1/2 months. I'm not sure why I waited so long since they had one tooth at 6 months. Sources: me .
I started feeding him cereal and fruit At about 3 1/2 months. I'd make the baby cereal thinner than usual, I also used formula to thin the cereal out. And the baby food apple sauce, pears etc.He went to solids about 11 months, of course teeth are the main factor.
He was on formula after 3 months after being breast milked until then.. he is now 6'3 and 190, I know many Dr. say no foods till a year, my Dr. back in 75, had no problem, his advise was if he is hungry feed him, the formula wasn't filling him up, he also slept better and all thru the night. Good luck..
5 months old to the day I kept reading that you should start your kids on solid food at 4 to 6 months old, so I took the middle of the road and started them at 5 months old. Both kids started with rice cereal, but my first born (daughter) had an allergic reaction when I mixed the cereal with formula. She never had a reaction to cereal mixed with water, or to formula (to supplement breastfeeding) by itself, but for some reason, the combo of the two wasn’t good for her.
I just didn’t even try cereal with formula for my second kid...... they both started with rice cereal, then went on to wheat and barley (don’t know what order those were introduced) after each cereal was introduced, I then started with the vegetables. I started with greens first (peas, green beans, etc. ), and then worked into the yellows and oranges (carrots, squash, etc.). I was under the understanding that the yellows and oranges are a bit sweeter, and that babies tend to like the sweet ones, and if introduced first, they were prone not to eat the greens..... then came all the different fruits last came the meats.
Both my kids were super hearty eaters, so I went through jars upon jars upon jars of food at one sitting, so it was easy to make a meal out of the different baby foods there were. I would just play it by ear since every kid is different. I hope this helps!

Baby My oldest son(32) was introduced first to rice ceral mixed with a little formula. He was and still is a very fussy baby. No one could make him happy. So the peditrician let try cereal.
It did satisfy him for a while. Until he wanted to move on to the next. I do no think they introduce solid so soon anymore.
My youngest son was the complete oposite. He was and still is happy with whatever he has at the moment..
