Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is something of a misnomer. According to one follow-up study of SCD, 50 percent of those who died "suddenly" during exercise had reported beforehand -- to spouses most often -- that they had some new, perhaps vague symptoms associated with physical activity: excessive tiredness, pains in the neck, shoulder, or chest, a feeling of fullness in the throat, or gastric discomfort. Indeed, it appears that one of the more typical reactions to symptoms of heart trouble such as tightness in the chest or shortness of breath, among men at least, is a good hard run to prove there's absolutely nothing wrong.
