Not as much as the greenies would have you believe. It only supplies about 1% now and has a long way to go to get to even 50% if that is possible. We are talking about decades before we get to even 10%.
Don't stop domestic oil production while you develop wind and solar.
The ideal situation would be for everyone to have a small fussion powered electric generator in their home. If that were true, i'm not sure we would need a grid. The military decentralizes all of it's military forces so that if one is destroyed the rest can still work. It's a little like the internet.
You could wipe out one node but the others would take over. Using current technology, you could have solar and wind but you would need battery storage for the times at night when the wind isn't blowing. That solution is very expensive and you may need to repair the generators and replace the batteries once in a while.
The other thing is, if everyone did it, there would be a shortage of materials and what was left would be expensive. Geothermal would be nice but that is expensive. Underground houses are probably the real answer.
A better question is WHETHER solar + wind will EVER influence energy production.
Decentralized power is better in the event of disaster. We become comfortable in believing centralized power is reliable GoldenLion 6 months ago .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
