You can potentially contact a design school like OTIS and ask them if they want a project for one of their classes.
Please offer to pay someone a little something. This is our job... this is how we live and eat. :) flickr.com/artanddesignstudios.
Glad this info is helpful. Starting out in any business always takes a lot of effort, and you can expect to work longer hours than in self-employment. By now you’re probably well aware of this.
My thoughts on spec work have never been hidden, and I advise steering well clear of logo design contest sites. Have you done any door-to-door selling of your services? It’s not easy, but helps to drum up local business.
I hope it works out well. Thanks for the AIGA contract link, and for your insight. I’d also avoid using the term ‘contract’, like you do, and as Jacob mentions.
‘Agreement’ is much less strict sounding. You’re very welcome. I’ve come across quite a few clients requesting confidentiality, even after the work is complete.
I take the approach that there’s no such thing as a dumb question. I make it very clear to clients that they shouldn’t hesitate if any questions whatsoever come to mind. Interesting how you mention escrow accounts.
I’ve never used one before, so any particular service preferences would be appreciated. Should you decide to take up self-employment, do let me know if I can be of help. Great to see you welcome encouragement to avoid spec work, and glad you appreciate this post.
That’s a coincidence, how you’ve just implemented contracts in your workflow. I can understand the extra comfort level they give, as most eventualities should be clarified from the start. Thanks for the tip about your local university.
I hope there’s some info here that does prove of use with your future clients. You’re very welcome. Likewise, and best of luck with Warewolf.
That’s a good point about repeat customers. I request that initial 50% from all new clients, and am more flexible with those I have worked with before. Then you’ve had that opportunity to build a higher level of trust.
The ‘vested interest’ point is indeed a valid one. I can fully empathise with those clients who disappear for months, only to return and expect immediate action, regardless of your other client projects. You’re very welcome for the BoDo link.
Cat, of NO! SPEC and Designers who Blog, put A LOT of work into it. Good luck developing your own contract.
For smaller jobs, such as flyers, I’d agree with your position. I also agree it’s better to use the term ‘agreement’ rather than ‘contract’, as Jennifer does. Glad you like the colour change.
I think it’s a step in the right direction, fitting more inline with my preferred style. Thanks for the comments, everyone.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
