You can't on Windows and for FireFox, you don't need to do anything. Windows brings in its own JVM implementation so any advantages or disadvantages are limited to the inbuilt jvm and we cannot change it to use the java installation. But when you install java in the standard way, then it updates itself into the path of the windows environment (if not sure, run a command window and type java -version and it will tell you which version it is) and then Firefox will pick this jvm up.

Make Sure you have Java V6 Installed first First of all you need to make sure you have Java Version 6 installed which is compatible with Vista. java.com/en/download/windows_ie.jsp Once Java is installed, you can enable or disable it by following these steps for IE 7 To enable or disable Java 1. To remove the Java software from your computer, uninstall it by using Uninstall or change a program in Windows Control Panel. Once Java is installed, you can enable or disable it by following these steps for Firefox: you're going to want to navigate to Tools, Options, and then Web Features. First, let's look at the Java option.
What is Java, and how does it affect you on the Web? Java is just a programming language that enables certain functions on websites. By default in Firefox, this option is checked off, but Firefox does NOT come with Java already installed.
If you come to a site that requires Java, Firefox will prompt you to install it. You don't have to install Java. It's not vital to your Web experience, but it's a nice feature.
I have it on my machines and I've never had any problems. If you would like to install Java direct from the source, here is the direct Java source. Okay, on to the next and last feature that we're going to look at in Firefox's security options - Enable JavaScript.
JavaScript is just another programming tool, and it is used to display images or text in a certain way.By default, the Enable JavaScript box is ticked and I recommend that you keep it that way, as there are many sites that will not display properly without it. However, I suggest that you click on the Advanced button. This is where you can really streamline your browsing experience by choosing which annoying or frustrating Javascript tricks you would rather not see.
I have every single one of these un-ticked. Try this and if you still have problems, uninstall Java from the Add and Remove Programs link in your Control Panel, then reinstall making sure to use Java 6 and check your settings again in IE and Firefox.
