I have a Toshiba laptop that I installed a new hard drive on. I installed Windows XP, but most hardware won't work?

I have a Toshiba laptop that I installed a new hard drive on. I installed Windows XP, but most hardware won't work. I have a network card that lights up, but the laptop says there isn't one found.

USB ports work to charge my mp3 player, but won't actually show it or the file in windows explorer. I tried to play a cd in windows media and it says "cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. I don't have a utilities disc, and I'm not sure what model this is, but if you need to know and tell me where to look, I can provide that too.

Thanks for any help! Asked by Noillyprat 47 months ago Similar questions: Toshiba laptop installed hard drive Windows XP hardware work Computers > Software.

Toshiba website - model number on the bottom (usually) .. Drivers missing. The Toshiba website may be able to tell you what hardware devices are in the machine, and you’ll need to use a different network-connected PC to download the drivers. Graphics, Network, Sound are the biggies.. There is also a program out there - AIDA32 - which can interrogate the machine, and will list what it can find as far as hardware devices in the machine are.

Download it on another machine, burn a CD with AIDA and all the hardware drivers you can find, and that at least gets you heading to a functional machine. And once the network comes up, be sure to go to Windows Update and get the last year’s updates - they’re vital. Good luck!.

You're probably just missing drivers My advice to you if you don't have the original cd's is to simply download drivers from the vendors website. For instance, ATI has many old / new video drivers available online for your video card. Just go through your hardware and find out who made it and download the drivers for it.

The only other thing you can do is call your vendor to get a copy of the drivers for a small fee. As always good luck ~Jon .

Pretty poor support After looking on the Toshiba website the driver page is: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modItemList.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1049664994.1199108180@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfaddmleeihjgcgfkceghdgngdgmn.0&ModelDLOS=Windows+XP%7C132594&ModelDLCat=null&BV_SessionID=@@@@1049664994.1199108180@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfaddmleeihjgcgfkceghdgngdgmn.0&ListType=Model&ct=DL&moid=1039003&rpn=PTA30U&OrderBy=D&PublicStartIndex=0&PrivateStartIndex=0&PublicCutOff=&PrivateCutOff=&AddOldPublicItems=false&AddOldPrivateItems=undefined&all_docs=true&x=54&y=13 However, this is not going to be of much help. Most of the drivers you require are not there. I read your discussion where you say that toshiba will not help you.

You should excellate this to a second or third level person on their support line. A final thought... Do you have a the old drive and did you over-write it yet? If you have it and didn't reuse it yet, you could use a utility like Ghost to copy your installed windows over to the new drive.

If you don't have the software, it will cost the same or more than the restore disk. Sounds like you're missing all the drivers. You need to either get the reinstall disk, or dig around for the drivers as follows. Start off with Windows Update, assuming you have internet connectivity, and update to the latest service pack level.

Microsoft may provide some of the missing drivers. If you select Custom when asked how you want to search for updates, you will see Hardware Updates on the left hand task bar. If there are any, click on that and check any hardware downloads.

First off, locate the model number on a label usually on the backside of the laptop. Then right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager. All those yellow exclamation/question marks represent missing drivers.

Make a note of them. Then go to technical Support on Toshiba's website. Locate the page for your model of laptop and start downloading and installing the latest versions for each driver.

Some drivers may cover a dozen items in your device list, others just one. If you can't find some, you may have to go to the manufacturer's website for that item. For instance, video drivers are not written by Toshiba, but by whoever made the graphics chip in your laptop: ATI(AMD), nVidia, or Intel, probably.

Your device list will clue you into which manufacturer and chipset you have. Hang in there. It's a lot of work, but I've done it before and it is possible, after many reboots.

1 You are most definitely missing the drivers. When you installed xp, did you use the disc that came with your pc, or is it fresh install? Did it include service pack2?(thats where a lot of drivers like usb are ) All you really need right now is the network card driver so you can get online.

Search the discs that came with your unit, They usually have a driver disc. After that you can go to Toshiba or even Microsoft for the rest of the drivers. BTW, What about the backup and data from the old drive?

The drivers are on there.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
