Well unless your really wanting to punish yourself by patching up an old workhorse, then I would suggest leaving the old laptop in a closet and then save your nickels and dimes and get yourself a new machine. I too have an old IBM Thinkpad, and unfortunately I spent hundreds of dollars on it, and I still just have an old, slow computer. Sure I could wipe it clean and run linux on it, but I have little, to no personal use for linux, so why waste the time and effort.

I purchased myself a newer laptop with part of my tax refund last year and it has all the bells and whistles, and I'm quite happy with it; though now I wish I had a tablet instead :) .

It is a question of money. If you can afford a new laptop, you have listed all the reasons. If you don't need a higher speed, etc, and/or lack the money, check out a new battery a lot cheaper now than when that was new, clean up the files with a free cleaner from CNET, and see if that is satisfactory.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
