I have Comcast cable-I always thought you will not need to buy an HD box if you have cable?

Here's the scoop If you have an HD television, then you can get a Comcast HD cable box. This is different from the regular Comcast cable box in that it handles the HD signal. If you have a regular TV, then the regular Comcast cable box will continue to work after February 17.

This is because Comcast gets their signal via cable or satellite from the TV stations and networks. Not over the air. And then they deliver it to you via cable. So they will continue to deliver their signal the way thay always have.

It won't be HD signals, it will be "dumbed down" to regular broadcasting to match your TV. So you don't need to worry when February 17 comes..

I have Comcast! I also have HD. You need the Comcast HD box if you want to see the programs in HD.

Channels 1 to 199 are in analog. Channels 200 up are in HD. Might be the same channels but one is Analog, and one is HD.As of February 9th all broadcasting will only be in HD, but not all people will have a HD TV.

If they have cable it will be automatically be changed back to Analog on the Analog Channels. They will not have to buy a additional box. If you are receiving TV by a Antenna.

Not to many people today are. Those people will have to buy a box to convert back to analog after Feb.. 9th. They might even have to get a different antenna, that I am not sure of.

There is Government help for people that can not afford to by the analog box.

The digital conversion only applies to over-air broadcasts. Cable TV is still subject to the cable companies' whims. In other words, the cable belongs to comcast, and comcast has the privilege of deciding whether to broadcast channels in analog or digital formats.

Presumably, if they decide to go to a broadcast your current cable box is not compatible with, then they will upgrade your cable box for you.

1 Comcast will downconvert the signal to NTSC for you, so you will not need a new cable box. However, you will still need an HDTV combatible cable box to receieve gh-definition ATSC signals.

2 If you have a HD tele and want to get HD channels to play in HD resolution, then you will need an HD box. It will cost an additional fee per month. This is NOT the same thing as the Feb 09 switch to "all-HD" broadcast (if that's what you're concerned about).

With ANY cable box and a "live" cable connection, you will be able to see the channels you currently pay for. They won't necessarily be received in HD, but you will be able to watch them. You won't notice any difference in what you're seeing now.

However, if you were to see the difference in "normal" cable broadcast and "HD" cable broadcast, you'd be amazed.
