I have many VHS tapes, and want to back them up to DVD and donate the VHS tapes to the Library...question below. First, what software and/or hardware do I need to connect my VCR to my compuer. Second, what software copies and compresses the VHS movie onto ONE DVD?

This is only for home use, and I'm making one copy for personal use only, and donating the original VHS tapes to my local Library. Links to software, reviews, hardware, instructions, details would be much appreciated. The machine exists - mine's Panasonic - up to 8 hours on one DVD - performance excellent, instructions difficult. You can buy a combined video and DVD recorder (mine is Panasonic) that allows you to stick the video in one slot and a blank DVD in the other and press Copy. I'm very pleased with mine (it acts as an ordinary recorder and player as well) although the instruction book equates to 'open the box with the crowbar you will find inside.' It gives you the choice of up to eight hours on one DVD, and I haven't noticed much drop in quality when you cram the DVD full.

It's as simple as that, although the instruction book really is a so-and-so and if I were you I'd either buy it from a shop that will install it and give you on-tje-spot instructions or I'd ask a small child to work it out.

I've been doing the same the last month, and my best results has been done with "VirtualDub"... First, of course, you need a TV Capture Card. I have a cheaper one (Pixelview) and it works pretty good. Next, assuming you have installed the card, download Virtualdub which is a freeware video encoder and editing software for windows.

You can find some good tutorials on how to capture your VHS video using virtualdub in Doom9. Once you have the encoded video in your PC, then you need a DVD authoring tool. I use Sony DVD Architect, but there is a lot.

Just google for "DVD authoring tool" and choose whatever you like. Good luck with your encoding! Cheers!Carlos..

It's illegal A personal archival backup copy is only legal if you still own the original media. Making copies and then donating the VHS tapes would put you in a position to potentially get arrested for copyright infringement. In cases like this, it's sort of silly but it's the law.

I have computer disks that I can't even access anymore because I copied the software onto CDs and legally either have to throw out the CDs or keep the disks around.

Pinnacle Studio is what I will use (version 10). I have it and it will be this winters project. But legally you only own the plastic tapes, not the content, so you can't both copy it to save for yourself and donate it to the library for others to view.

Copy it and destroy the tapes if you have morals. Check with your library first though to see if they want them. Our library is almost finished with it's project of eliminating VHS; going all DVD by the end of the year, and it has been selling tapes for $1 each.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
