Having not read David Sedaris I can have a flyer but here are two authors that make me laugh out loud (see details)... Dave Barry, ex journalist, wrote a novel called 'Big Trouble'. Irrevernt and hysterical. Bill Bryson, from Des Moines, writes about his traveks around the globe.
Self-effacing and gut-bustingly funny. S first book is 'The Lost Continent' but get a feel for his humour by reading either 'Notes from a Small Island' (his experieces as an American living in the UK) or 'Notes from a Big Country' (a collection of columns covering his experiences as an American, who has lived in the UK for 20 years, returns home). If you enjoy these the rest of his books you will devour.
Hope that helps, I'm off to buy some Sedaris... I'd recommend Sarah Vowell If you're a fan of The Incredibles, she does the voice of Violet. Besides having a very interesting voice, she's also a funny writer. Like David Sedaris, she writes autobiographical non-fiction.
Also like Sedaris, she's a regular contributer to NPR. You can hear her read a selection of one of her novels (or just read the selection yourself) here. I particularly enjoyed Assassination Vacation. In it, she travels to sites related to Presidential assassinations.
An odd concept, and an odd book, but funny and enjoyable. Only slight warning I'm going to give you is that her politics come through loud and clear...she's very liberal. I certainly didn't agree with all her politics, but I still find her funny and enjoyable.

2 I would second the recommendation of Bill Bryson. A Walk in the Woods is one of the funniest books I've read. Allhis books have gentle humor.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
