I use Verizon high speed DSL internet. Im moving..can I just change the phone # and still use this internet service?

I use Verizon high speed DSL internet. Im moving..can I just change the phone # and still use this internet service? I have a box and cords and all things that came with my Verizon installation kit...including CD.

I wonder if any technical experts/computer people out there can help me with this. The Verizon DSL is connected to my phone line of course but since I'm moving in with my fiance, and he doesn't have internet service at the moment (his laptop is not working), can I just bring my laptop, modem and equipment and connect it to his phone line at his house and have Verizon change the number on my account? Will they provide me with service still?

I hope someone can help me with this...I was going to call them, but I don't want to sound like an idiot if this question will receive a negative response by them....so wanted to ask the community here first..thanks for helping.. No, you cannot just move the DSL modem to another line… The way that DSL works is by transmission of another frequency of signal on the line that is the DSL carrier. That is why you need DSL filters on your phones throughout the house: they filter out that higher-pitch noise from your regular conversations. Moving the modem from one phone line to another will not work because that signal will not be there by default.

On top of that, there are a number of parameters that must be properly configured for the modem to communicate correctly with the phone company. If you and your fiancé do not live in the same city and, thus, do not have the same phone company (Verizon) for your phone service provider, those parameters will probably not be the same. I actually wrote an article that speaks about these parameters on my business website.

If you are interested, please read it over at bdcusa.com/dslmodem.html The best idea is to get in touch with Verizon, find out if they have DSL service in your fiancé's city and, if so, whether his address has it available. Then see if they would let you switch the service over to his address (doubtful since the two of you are not married and, thus, your name is not on his account as being an authorized contact). It can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks to get the configuration for the DSL set up properly.

If DSL has not been on the physical phone line to that connection (as opposed to the phone number) before, often a line technician has to go out to the site to perform some tests and do other work to prepare the line for DSL. Also, there is the provisioning for the service that must occur at the phone company's end. This is not like moving a lamp from one place to another, unfortunately.

Chances are that you will still be able to use the same modem even if you get your DSL service from a phone company other than Verizon. However, you will need to check with the new service provider and let them know what modem you have before that can be determined. DSL service is standardized itself but some modems are "burned" so as to be configured for use only with a certain DSL provider.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you. Sources: 22 years of experience as a computer technician and 20 years of experience owning a computer sales and services business .

1 I have DSL also, but the thing unique about it is that the 'modem' for the DSL phone line applies to that 'telephone number. ' For example, I could not connect my DSL to the other phone number in my house. I believe you have to call the telephone service provider for the phone you will be using.

If they have DSL service, you have a connection, but it may not be the same type box unless it is also Verizon. Call the phone company of the new location and they will give a straight answer.

2 The central office has to have the head end equipment to provide DSL on the line. There are still a lot of lines that won't support it, especially in older neighborhoods, so call the service provider to find out if you can transfer the service.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
