If a person wants to record tv shows, would it be less expensive to buy a programmable vcr and also a dvd player?

It seems like the recordable vcr's are fairly cheap now but the dvd's aren't and the combo's are still up there also. Am I right? If you wanted to be able to program vcr to record when you may not be there and also needed the dvd to play more recent movies what would you do?

My daughter wants to check out movies from the library but they are all on dvd's now. I want to record at times shows that I can't stay awake and watch or we are gone so we need both. All we have now is a vcr that plays movies but doesn't record unless you stay there--which I think is a waste for me-if you are going to be home and record you might as well watch it.

Please give me your thoughts and ideas. Can you recommend one that does a good job but isn't "high end" in cost? I would like to get one for our family's Christmas present this year.

Sure thing... THere are several choices for you to make... Tivo is a digital recording device that will record HOURS AND HOURS of your favorite TV programming, all with simple set up. It can get a little expensive though, with annual service contracts, etc. Comcast actually has a digital reciever that has a built in DVR (digital video recorder) - basically, the same as the Tivo, just as easy if not easier to program, and it costs like $10 a month added to your cable bill. One of those two options will take care of your TV recording needs, without the need to buy other things such as recordable DVDs and other supplies (jewel cases for the DVDs, etc...) You can also purchase, rather inexpensively, combo DVD/Video player machines - and these sometimes have the ability to record to VHS any DVD you are watching - as long as it isnt write protected (which most are now, so this feature is useless...) Radio CHack carries one for around $100... So, for $100 investment and $10/month, you could take care of this problem easily.

TV.............recordings. I have DirecTV with a 35 hours DVR. They now have a 100 hours model.

This records all mine and my daughters shows. You can set it up to record seasonally and so you only set it up once and it records everytime the show is one. You can also record first runs only or repeats too.

You can set up how many episodes you want to save 1,2,3,4,5 or 10. This has made our TV viewing much better. We can watch our shows anytime.

And you zip through all the commercials in a split second-so an hour show is about 40 minutes. If a show changes times or days it automatically does it for you. We love it.As for the DVD player.

Store like Warehouse Liquidator sell them for about $30. You can get models in Walmart for between $30 and $50. They all play equally and the price is small enough that as long as it plays I don't care about the brand name.

Good Luck-TIVO did change our lives. We couldn't live without now. I pay $63 or so a month for local channels and the basic package.

I my be in the Dark Ages but, I still use a VCR for recording TV. And if there's something I want to memorialize on DVD, I can connect to the PC and burn it to disk. Now granted, the VCR tape quality is nowhere near what you'd get with an optical disk but really, who cares?

We're gonna watch the show and then record over it anyway. But it won't be long and VCR's will be more common in the Smithsonian Institute than in Kmart........which is where I got my last one. They were piled in a corner and covered with dust which is a clear indicator that they won't be taking up store space much longer.

If the bottom line is cost, then go the cheap route and get the VCR. Always go with a known name brand and, as with any other electronic gadget, check the warranty BEFORE you buy it. That's a story for another day..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
