If you are a Creative Writing instructor and grade and critique short stories, how would you remark upon things inapprop?

If somewhere in the story, a character exclaims, "That way way cool, dude! ," but the story takes place in 1919, how would you remark over that? What would you suggest that he says instead?

Another example: A character looks up or uploads a video on YouTube and the story takes place in 2004. What'll you say when you comment on that? Just say the story is not historically accurate It is not really a critique, per se, just that 'historical fiction', unless it is alternate history, is expected to get the basic facts right.

Re-writing appropriately can be graded one grade down for the research! .

Either the person is doing a Moulin Rouge and singing seventies pop songs in 19th century France All. The. Time.

Or the it's a mistake and it must be fixed. Thus, if one character says, "Way cool, dude," then another must say later, "Tubular, man. " and a third add, "Wicked!"

Playing with anachronistic elements is fun--why else do we have steampunk? But consistency is all.

1 I would red pencil it and down grade the paper with no comment. It's not up to the teacher to suggest anything. If someone is taking a creative writing class in college, and hasn't yet mastered the basics of writing, there isn't much point in wasting any time on them.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
