If you are watching a foreign-language film, do you prefer subtitles, or dubbing?

I prefer subtitles too, but for a different reason. I feel that hearing the actors' voices help me to understand the characters' emotions better just like while I was watching these Korean dramas: hubpages.com/hub/Top-3-Korean-Dramas-in-200.

Definitely subtitles. Dubbing often turns out horribly, since the entire sound of the movie (background noises, music, etc. ) has to completely re-done (or at least re-mixed) in order to make the movie sound "normal". Most often, not only is the dubbing shoddy, but so is the rest of the audio.

A lot of the original audio can't be used at all, since there is no way to isolate character's speech from whatever sounds also happen to be in the background.

There is ONE EXCEPTION to this rule. Godzilla! I find the dubbing in Godzilla films hilarious.

The newer ones have great soundtracks as well.

Subtitles for sure. I know it can be cumbersome to watch the action and read at the same time, but I find dubbing so unrealistic and distracting that it detracts from my enjoyment of the film.

I prefer subtitles. The sound of the actors' voices, as well as the language, is all part of the experience of the film, I think.

I prefer subtitles, for two reasons. 1) dubbing typically makes the movie have a comedic aspect that may not go with the actual theme of the film. Hearing a voice that obviously does not belong to the person speaking is just humorous in my mind.2) the few films I have watched where I know the language and read the subtitles, it is interesting how they translate the script.

What words are changed and which ones are made to fit a culture or lost in translation completely. This way you can still get the general feeling of the film and still try and improve your own language skills while listening and interpretting yourself.

I always like subtitles more and usually preffer rather not watching dubbed movies mainly because subtitles are highly more accurate, not a perfect translation bur surely better than dubbing mainly because of the fact that when you're using words in sound you need to match the times and the mouth movement so it doesn't look ridiculous which obviously leads to a not so good translation and sometimes that can kill the entire movie purpose.

I also like subtitles. I like picking out phrases of the original language and learning a bit more. Translations are often ambiguous and the original tone of voice helps our understanding of the mood.

I personally prefer subtitles. It also depends on what kind of movie you are watching. If its a serious move that makes you think, then subtitles is the choice.

But if its a light movie, and lots of humor is involved it is better if its dubbed. I can tell from my personal experience. I am russian, and english is my second language.

When I used to watch some american movies in the past with russian dubbing I swear that some of them were done bad, but most of them were done pretty good, usually comedies because they adopted translation according to the audience inserted some russian jokes...otherwise people would not get most of the stuff.

But if its an independent movie or some drama, definitely subtitles. It gives you chance to feel the characters, their tone, to better understand them and what the director whated to show you.

I prefer subtitles, dubbing takes away the soul of the movie.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
