If you ask a question about, say the Preakness in Baltimore, will it show up in sports and the Baltimore sister site?

From what I understand, there are sister sites like the one you mentioned, and some users ask questions from those sites. Those questions are then imported automatically to Mahalo. But this does not work both ways, for example, if you ask a question here on Mahalo, it will not be exported to a sister site.

If you click on a question that was asked from a sister site, you will be transferred to that site. I recommend asking questions from Mahalo and categorizing it as well as you can using the Mahalo categories.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
