If you could give ten things (tangible objects, I mean) to everyone in the world, what would they be?

Assuming that they all had enough food and shelter, and I'm not after answers like 'universal love and peace;' there are some books, pieces of music, etc. , etc., that I buy every time I see them because I know I'll want to give them to my friends. I'll share my list later if you'll share yours but here's how it starts (reasons would be good, too):A DVD of Carlos Kleiber conducting Beethoven's Fifth and Seventh Symphonies: the recordings are stellar (and available on CD) but the DVD of him conducting the Seventh is pure magic - his subtle interactions with the orchestra, his balletic movements, his utter commitment to the music and the expressions on the faces of the players as they are led into the best performance they've ever given; indescribably brilliant. In no particular order: maybe I am thinking more generalized but this is what came to mind... 1. A timer - I think if people set a timer and stopped to think about something before talking and acting, they might make a lot less harmful and poor choices 2. A camera - taking photos can give you an interesting perspective on life. It's funny how sometimes you don't really see something until you snap a photo of what you "see" then really look at it 3.

A safe place to call home - I think everyone deserves the right to a place that they can safely rest and repair themselves for the next day. It doesn't matter if it is a shack or a palace, people need a place to feel safe and call home 4. The Bible (in their native language) - I think everyone can benefit from reading the Bible.

Even if you are not a Christian and/or don't believe in God, the Bible has amazing parables that reveal truths about human nature. It's also a great literary work.5. A trip to another country - this would change their perspective on life and the conditions in which they live, experiencing someone else's culture helps to reduce selfishness, assumptions, prejudice, ethnocentrism 6.

Lessons on basic self-subsistence - their are some areas of the world where people eat poorly, or are starving because they lack the knowledge or skills to provide for themselves through farming, raising livestock, or reciprocity. Rather than dropping food on them, it would be more beneficial in the long term to help them acquire skills and resources to be self sufficient 7. Lessons on health - Even in America, it seems like we lack basic knowledge of nutrition, the importance of exercise and rest, and an understanding of the harms of excessive caffeine consumption, among other things.

In another country, these lessons could be something as simple as brushing your teeth to prevent decay, or washing your hands to prevent the spread of infections and viruses, or safe sex to prevent HIV and AIDS.8. A non-human companion - maybe this animal is a dog, cat, bird, goat, pig, cow, lizard, etc.Maybe this animal is domesticated and lives in your home, or it is a wild animal that you admire from a distance and occasionally catch a glimpse of... Maybe your companion is a plant, or even a place in the forest or desert. I think it is important for our sanity to have something non-human (and ideally uncorrupted by humans) to connect with.

Nature and animals ground us, and teach us things about ourselves that we might not otherwise learn.9. Access to clean water 10. ...I'm all out of ideas .

A Nerf Gun and Nine Nerf darts Sounds silly, but it works. You give any group of people a non-lethal means of showing overt dissatisfaction with one another, and they will use that before they go anywhere near the real thing. Family gatherings have always had a certain tension (for my family, anyway), so one year I gave everyone a Nerf gun with darts as stocking stuffers.

Everyone went to Christmas morning armed and ready. While clearly not a traditional Christmas, this had the desired effect of eliminating petty arguments, discussion about religion, politics and current status of dating, marriage and child bearing. Any time one person would start down a path that 'everyone knew' would lead to an argument, someone in the crowd would take a pot-shot at the speaker and change the topic (granted, they could only change the topic to laughter and a flurry of nerf darts, but still.) We rely on language as the primary means of communication, and sometimes a physical act, even a harmless one, can show others our dissatisfaction in their language or behavior.

I'm not sure this would actually resolve world issues, but it would a whole new dimension to communication. Imagine if Congress or even the UN Delegates were armed with nerf dart guns. I think it would be a whole lot more difficult to argue in favor of whatever ridiculous policy with hundreds of nerf darts boinking off of one's face.

Comments like: We've really improved our record on human rights... We're doing all we can in Darfur... We're not taking advantage of near slave-labor conditions in China... ...would undoubtedly bring a hail of nerf missiles, something that the rules of parlimentary procedure simply don't allow. It could open communication in a whole new way. Of course, this assumes that "I learned everything I ever really needed to know in kindergarten", and the beauty of that book is that you don't need to read it to get it.

You just need the appropriate tools to implement those lessons. While I love Beethoven's Fifth, I'm not sure it would change human interaction on a large scale. Remember, guns don't kill - at least, not the Nerf ones.

- The archetypal "Renaissance Man" and quite possibly the most diversely talented man to have ever lived, DaVinci’s insatiable curiousity and conceptualizations led to the formulation of a myriad of inventions, theorizing and disparate career opportunities. Five years of painstaking, accurate research this dissertation of a man known predominantly for his artistic endevours, was the long-awaited homage to a genius, an engineer, a scientist, a musician a philosopher, a cleric and so much more. A tribute to a man who was 200 years ahead of his time.

Good question.... Coming up with 10 is kind of hard though....and they are all going to sound meaningless to most :) 1. A box of Girl Scout cookies, just because they make everyone smile. 2.

A Nintendo DS with generic board games on it because its fun. 3. A subscription to Family Fun magazine because it has the best ideas :) 4.

A gift card to McDonald's because secretly we all love mcnuggets :) 5. A ticket to Disney World - the happiest place on earth. 6.

A photo album full of nature photos, including the 7 wonders....then we can all view and appreciate the magnificence that lies out there. 7. A bible Still thinking on 3 more....

1 EnglishLady:I don't mean to be harsh here, but you're assuming everyone in the world already has a DVD player, access to electricity, is literate (so they can read the instructions and remote) and speaks English, so they can read the title list etc...? (I would guess less than 10% of the people on the planet actually have all of these things)...Anyway, making the asumption that anything on our list technologically or culturally, would be understood, and trying to avoid really big issues as you mentioned, here's my list:1. The movie The March of the Penguins.2. A book featuring high quality pictures of nature (climates: desert, jungle, savannah...) from around the world.3.

A collection of samples of various candies and chocolates from around the world.4. A form of communications medium that opens up the world to someone who is isolated (cell phone/satellite phone, Internet service, shortwave radio, mail service, printing press with the ability to distribute...)5. An in-depth awareness of the ongoing UFO phenomenon, sightings etc...throughout recent history...6.

A pet of some kind, dog, cat, bird, other/any... with the food and knowledge to care for it properly thoughout its life.7. A collection of seeds and cuttings, for growing a variety of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants and flowers, and the land and water to grow them...8. A collection of the world's finest literature, with the ability to read it all (translations...)9.

A textbook explaining all the fundamental scientific discoveries of the last 500 years (medicine, chemistry, physics, engineering... - excluding the topic of evolution).10. Weapons, training and ammunition to defend oneself against any reasonable threats.(I wanted to pick classical music myself and other smaller things, but I guess ten items is not enough).

How much responsibility do individuals have to make things better for society.

Ten things you want to do before you die...

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
