Aside from most likely not being given the option to stay down below it really wouldn't solve any problems. The wife and mistress already know about each other so the damage is done. What punishment can they inflict that is worse than being buried alive for over two months?
There is simply nothing to gain by staying underground. I would (never be in this situation) come to the surface and man up to my mistakes.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
