Los Angeles will have more internships to choose from than Denver, especially for web or social media, as there are lots of start-up and established internet companies here like Mahalo who offer internships. I have included links to some other companies below. The steps listed here can be applied to any location in the US.
Get an idea of who offers internships for web and social media by subscribing to to a feed of internships as they are posted on Dice and Craigslist. Dice has the majority of engineering/technical and web jobs. Once you see some companies that interest you, go to each of their websites and subscribe directly to their job postings.
You will need to build a network so you can see if anyone you know has connections to anyone working in these companies. Build a professional profile on LinkedIn. Post your status as looking for internships.
LinkedIn gets exclusive postings from its members. Also, build your network of connections by starting with professors and anyone you have ever worked or volunteered for, as well as friends who have graduated and are out working. It would also be useful for you to start attending Meetups in your area that are related to the types of internships you are looking for.
Print business cards to handout. Strike up conversations with folks and get their cards. The next day, contact them through LinkedIn, thank them for their time, and ask if you can add them to your network.
For a sports related internship, check out http://www.aegworldwide.com. Their corporate office is in LA. They have multiple venues here, and they offer internships.
If you take these steps starting now, I believe you will have the strongest network of any other student at graduation. It should go without saying, but make sure your social networking profiles are squeaky clean. Have fun!
Skyvan This is a very good question. Before you start your internship, here are some things to consider and ask yourself. 1.
Paid or Unpaid, are you okay with an unpaid internship? Are you seeking college credit for your internship? 2.
Are you okay with a virtual internship? I know you say you would like an internship in Los Angeles or Denver, but does it need to be in an office setting? LA will most likely have more to offer as internships go instead of Denver, but if you like Denver I can find you a great internship in Denver.
If you like Los Angeles, there are more social media companies than you can think of in California. There are plenty of startups and social media outlets in Denver though as well. In Los Angeles area, you might want to check out Mahalo of course, but there are plenty of others.
With Mahalo you can contact Mahalo through this site, and email Jason. I'm sure he has some things for you to do. One good one for you in Los Angeles would be KoldCast.TV, it's a great Internet television startup or if you like video production, and internship at Turn Here can be something for you.
http://turnhere.com or if you're into goal setting companies, YSN. Com is always looking for interns. I know someone at each of these companies, and can send you their contact info if you're interested.
If you are interested in commercial aviation, you might want to check out VirginAmerica or Continental Airlines. They both have hubs on the west coast. If you're looking in Denver, there is always Fuser http://www.fuser.com For a general list of companies to narrow down your search, you might want to look on a site like TradeVibes and check out its advanced search.
You can search for companies by location. This site is great simply because you can find many of the companies, and then inquire about internship opportunities. http://www.tradevibes.com/search/advanced For example, in Los Angeles area I found these companies: SocialVibe Seethroo Geni DAVE Networks Groovr And a hundred more!
Your best bet is not to contact the companies blindly sometimes, but rather to seek out which companies are looking for interns. So, instead of going to the companies directly, it's best to look places online that assist with internships. One person I highly recommend you contact is Lauren Berger, the InternQueen.
Her website is http://www.internqueen.com and she posts plenty of internship opportunities on the QuarterLife website. This is where you want to look: http://www.quarterlife.com/internships I would try to avoid looking at category killer sites like Craigslist (instead look at college focused sites like ULoop), or even better go to InternQueen or LinkedIn (growing your network on here can be helpful) for finding an internship or find someone in your family and friends network who is in the social media industry, or does something with it who would be interested. Lastly, be sure to check out my Mahalo page for How to Find a Summer Internship and even though it's for a summer internship, it will assist you with finding any internship.
There are also a bunch of great links there to assist you with your internship search as well. Hope this helps, and best of luck with your internship search!
Skyvan, I'm sorry that I don't have the answer you're looking for. Even though I'm sure it won't be the best answer, I wanted to leave a reply to try to help you out. In my experience Business Majors / MBA's fall into 2 very general categories: those who love learning and those who love doing.
There is nothing wrong with either, but a mix of both is unique. If your intern search turns up blank, start a small business. Come up with an easy, small product that will turn over quickly.
Think about the first season of The Apprentice. Each week, they had tasks that got them out on the street assembling and selling something. If you do something like that, set goals and succeed, not only will you have something great to put on your resume, but you'll have a distinct edge on a lot of fresh grad business folks.
Best of luck, I really hope that you find an internship!
1. Talk to tyler at mahalo. Com and lonharris at URL1. Mahalo has unpaid internships in the summer and we are thinking of doing it in the winter.
2. The following are all in Los Angeles and I could do an intro if you didn't want to do Mahalo: Causecast, DocStoc, ThisNext, Shopping.Com, MySpace, Gamefly, eHarmony.
I'd guess that your big problem with finding an internship for one month in December is that it's very bad timing for an internship. One month isn't long to learn what's going on, get stuck in and accomplish something useful for a company. It's ok for routine jobs like working a sales counter, but not for anything that really calls for a business major.I.e.
A month that is not so much an internship, as a Christmas job. Plus December is doubly problematic, because most teams in most companies are in one of two modes. Either they are frantically trying to finish a project that had a "before Christmas" deadline, or they they are getting demob happy before the holidays, and there is marked reduction in starting anything new, taking on any new people, and the general tempo with which business is done.In either mode, they're not going to be looking to take on a newbie.
So if I were in your position, I think I'd be looking to see if I can strike up a relationship with a company that can start well before December. For example, you might be able to do some work remotely earlier than that, or tailor some of your coursework to their needs. Then you won't be a newbie come December, and you could be a valued team member that can come to work onsite for a month.
Obviosly this might be easier with a company in Denver. I don't have any specific suggestions for the sectors you're interested in, but hopefully some of the Mahalo people will have good ideas for Social Media in LA. @socalsue's suggestions about networking are also very good.
I did a google search for web and social media internships an came up with: 1. facebook.com/ignitionentertainment 2. internweb.com/states/ca 3.
internweb.com/search.asp?p=&InternType=2... 4. internweb.com/internship/CA/10727/7485 5. entertainmentcareers.net/id/?id=98280 (in the Santa Monica area) Many more.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
