I'm writing a story and I want to make sure I'm on the right track or not. Can you think of a context where a society would agree to legal killings to keep a prison population down? Would love to see what you guys come up with... hopefully I am on the same page!
Lol If I'm not... maybe that could be a good thing too lol. Thx for any responses! Asked by greenplaid 24 days ago Similar questions: writing story make track Society > Ethics.

They have done that numerous times already. I think the latest was last year - a movie where they used convicts as drivers, and another where they were controlled game entities. However, considering the prison population is so small, I can't see that as a viable alternative.
However, in a fascist society, such as something like that would be allowed, and condoned.
Well, the two scenarios I see would relate to a society that had little value for individual life, or an environment where resources were extremely limited.
I am intrigued by the resource idea. This is something I was dabbling with. I wanted to set it in the future... after a second civil war... war does have a funny way of absorbing resources, but after so much death... would a society really disregard the individual's rights so easily just for a bit more bread?

Hunger is a pretty powerful motivator. Theprinciple behind the concept of euthanasia is that people who cannot contribute to society should stop using resources. In some cultures it was considered normal for an elderly person to leave the community and allow themselves to die of exposure; if they felt they were being a drain on the community.
Preservation of one's self is a big motivator when one is trying to survive! I can see that... when you are scavenging.... but what if they were no longer scavengers, but building a new society from the rubble of the last. Do you think a society could swallow this big pill... of killing some of the prisoner population just to keep them in line and save a few bucks/ resources?
I guess I am just trying not to think in a naive way... lol Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks. Greenplaid 24 days ago .
It is not uncommon for barbaric practices to survive into a more enlightened age; some people view our current death penalty rules in that manner. What I am seeing from your background information is that your story is set in a postwar society where available resources have been decimated, and out of desperation, society has turned to execution of many classes of criminal in order to preserve scare resources. As society rebuilds, that practice has become the social norm.
Are you perhaps writing of how your protagonist deals with that particular issue? .
Yes and no...lol... that is what I am leaning towards. The protagonist has to survive in what turns out to be a very corrupt system. Society thinks that the executions are random, but in reality they are governed by the warden who is a sadist.

That sounds like a good premise to work from. I have read stories that are written from much less.
I love stuff like this about writing & plots, etc.... but this is tough one. Your concept is great but I don't know what to tell you. Have you started?
What have you written so far? People say I'm good at writing so this is very interesting to me.
I have been working on this story for about six months now grandmabx. I am really excited about it, but I have kinda hit a wall. I am trying to imagine a world where my plot line would thrive.
Its tough for me to imagine because its hard to believe. I started writing it as it was a dream I had. I literally spent the next three weeks just writing, but then I hit the wall.
I thought, how would a society let this happen. Then it was like my imagination dried up. I just can't get past it.
I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure if they are overused or not. Greenplaid 24 days ago .
That is too gross! Like Human society or tler who got rid of any handicap kids etc.. Try to write a positive story...uplifting. Titanic story was written before it happened.
Don't let your story happen in real life by writing it. Write a positive story like Joel Osteen talks maybe if you can which would make the world a better place. Thanks.
.. Thank you for your response. I have to say writing a story about people who endure a hardship and then not only make it out, but changes the circumstances so others don't have the same thing happen to them... I personally think it will be a very exciting story and uplifting. The world is not a bed of roses.
Having a story where people survive when everything is against them is more realistic! Maybe I am just a pessimist though lol. Also you said " Don't let your story happen in real life by writing it" Just because you write a story, does not mean it will magically come true... otherwise there would be tons of dragons and vampires around lol.
I'm sure there are tons of other writers who have written it all. If we as writers don't write because of fear it would come true... well... there would be less stories out there. That would be a crime in itself.
If you write about a society of a bed of roses... it doesn't magically make the world full of peace and love. I wish it did. I would be the first to write it.
That just won't happen though. Greenplaid 24 days ago .

Howdo I make the writing bigger on my kindle.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
