In just one day 34 years of World of Warcraft was played. My question is; could that time have been spent any better? Here's the math.
This is according to my calculations feel free to do the math on your own. Xfire, a program that totals how much time is spent in games such as (but not only); World of Warcraft (henceforce know as WoW), Counter Strike, Neverwinter Nights, and many other publicly available games. I use WoW in this example for one reason, it is the leader in game sells in the world right now.
According to Xfire 18 Million. Yes 18,000,000 minutes of the game have been played today. Let me make this clear.
Xfire only totals the time you've played if you have this program. So only the small majority of the players of WoW have this program. Not all time is accounted for.18,000,000 Minutes.
That's 300,000 hours. That's 12,500 days.365 days in a year. So 12,500 divided by 365 is 34 and a quarter years.

Well, of course time could have been spent better But it could have been spent worse too. Entertainment is part of the human experience as is work and helping others. Many of the people playing WoW are working their time and giving as well.
I suspect playing WoW is better than watching TV. Sources: My answer .
Fake World, Real Money Just because it's recreational doesn't mean it's not meaningful - consider the Secondlife real-estate millionaire, or the companies in California that have multi-million dollar annual sales in in-game items, or the Chinese and Indian levelling companies that offer grinding services to ambitious players. Or consider Castronova's study on in-game economies: From "The Walrus Magazine" Economist Edward Castronova began calculating frantically. He gathered data on 616 EverQuest auctions, observing how much each item sold for in U.S.Dollars.
When he averaged the results, he was stunned to discover that the EverQuest platinum piece was worth about one cent U.S. — higher than the Japanese yen or the Italian lira. With that information, he could figure out how fast the EverQuest economy was growing. Since players were killing monsters or skinning bunnies every day, they were, in effect, creating wealth.
Crunching more numbers, Castronova found that the average player was generating 319 platinum pieces each hour he or she was in the game — the equivalent of $3.42 (U.S. ) per hour. "That's higher than the minimum wage in most countries," he marvelled. Then he performed one final analysis: The Gross National Product of EverQuest, measured by how much wealth all the players together created in a single year inside the game.It turned out to be $2,266 U.S.Per capita.
By World Bank rankings, that made EverQuest richer than India, Bulgaria, or China, and nearly as wealthy as Russia. It was the seventy-seventh richest country in the world. And it didn't even exist.

Of course. Would it have been? Probably not.
In my opinion games, such as WoW, CS:S, NWN etc. Are keeping individuals away from other acts, perhaps detrimental to themselves or others. The violence rate among youth has consistently been going down and obviously gamers would like to think it’s the fact that many more are playing games, therefore keeping them out of trouble. If your question is simply, "Could the time have been spent any better?
" Of course. There is no doubt about it, but you could also ask the people sitting infront of their television for hours per day, web surfers, people who enjoy sleep etc the same question. If everyone collectively decided to volunteer their time rather than waste it away infront of modern day enjoyments the world may be a better place.
I say may, because in all honesty, how many times have you been bored and contemplated the "egging" of a house, burning ants, shooting of fireworks and other things many delinquent kids decide to do, as a child, or even now. That’s my quick broken answer :). Too many thoughts going through my head on this topic, so it’s a bit of a mess.
Over 18s answer.... I have a friend who left her boyfriend over WoW, so yes he could clearly have spent his time better! .
1 oddbob, regarding your answer "Fake World, Real Money":Ah! So true. Very true indeed.
The money is no more that a code in a server somewhere. Alas the US dollar is nothing more than a piece of paper. Do we really need more "currencies" being developed in this ever declining economy?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
