This is interesting in a couple of ways. In my answer to one of the other questions I expressed my admiration for King Solomon, who had 1000 wives and concubines. But the rabbis criticised him for having too many.
The bible does say that the King of Israel should not have too many wives; but, the language is really vague about exactly how many. It uses the exact same wording for not having too much gold or too many chariots. But how many chariots should a king have?
Surely not one! And the same goes for gold, certainly one gold coin would be inadequate for a national treasury. So, how many wives?
Some rabbis tried to work it out linguistically, and thought it might be 16, or 32, or 64. But it wasn't very definitive. "The great 11th century Torah commentator Rashi tells us that this means no more than 18" You will often see sources claiming that Solomon was punished by G-d for having too many wives; but, in fact he was not as Israel remained at its zenith throughout his life.
Only when he died after 40 years of rule did the kingdom split and decline. Personally, as King Solomon's wisdom was legendary and the success of his kingdom unparalleled, I think it unwise to second guess him. As for how many children, with the Earth overburdened with an unsustainable human population, it should be one child per wife.
If the population were down to sustainable levels it could increase to two children per wife.
