Not for me I think that this service is great for someone who listens to music all day long. Someone like a painter or store owner or a taxi driver. If your an individual, chances are that you probably don't listen to music all day long.
You probably also have a music collection, maybe an iPod. I have so much music that getting satellite radio would just be overkill. I don't think it's worth it for me.
Just ask yourself the question How often would I listen? , if the answer is 1 to 2 hours a week, then pass of it's a lot, maybe it's worth it for you.
Not IMHO Personally, I don't think it's worth the monthly expense, never mind the initial cost of the equipment. I'm fortunate enough that I don't travel much and I have a couple of radio stations that I really like in my area (Rochester, NY; wber.monroe.edu/site/html/index.php, thezone941.com/ and mydrivefm.com/main.html). The first of those is run by the local community college, so it doesn't even carry that many commercials and the chat is minimal (useless chat and commercials being the 2 things I normally hate about radio and that would make me consider getting satellite radio).
When I do travel long distances by car, I use my iPod and a Kensington FM transmitter. Absolutely zero mindless chat and no commercials there and the music played is excellent :-) Finally, I have a friend that subscribes to Sirius (got it free with his new vehicle). He let me "borrow" his login details to listen to Sirius online.
Although I liked the fact that there were no commercials or useless chat, I wasn't that impressed with the music they were playing and gave up on it after a couple of weeks. Quite frankly, if the music isn't good enough, it's definitely not worth listening to for me. That killed any thoughts I may have had about subscribing to Sirius/XM.
If you like some of the talk or sports programs (e.g. , Howard Stern, a man I can't stand), then Sirius/XM may be worth it to you but I have no interest in those programs. It's all about the music for me. From my experience (and it was a bad experience), No. It wasn't worth it to me. But, I am not in my car enough to listen to it, either.
But, if you are in your car and will utilize the service, then yes, it may be worth it to you. We really used it to listen to Big 10 football games on Saturdays when we traveled in the fall, but it just wasn't worth it overall to us. We paid about $12-$15 per month, but we had a longer contract service term.
I will forewarn you, if you go with XM, and you want to cancel your service (even with a contract that ends), be sure to write a letter at least one month prior to your contract end, AND make a phone call and document EVERYTHING (and keep copies of everything)! From our experience, we had made the call and such, and then we rec'd a letter from a collection agency two months later saying that we owed them for two months and interest on the money. WELL, I made several phone calls (of which they had me on hold for over an hour) in order to have the account completely shut off and the collections removed from our credit report!
I had to explain to them that I had made the call and written a letter...they had to "look into it, because even if a contract ends, they continue to leave it on and bill the subscriber). After several calls, they finally took care of the matter, but I told them that I would NEVER use their service ever again, even if it was free! .
Depends... Here are some different circumstances and different perspectives based on the circumstances. I think it totally depends on where in the world that you are. If you are in New York or San Francisco or London or anywhere near a big city there are so many radio stations playing a wide variety of music and talk shows.
I think in these circumstances paying for radio isn't necessary or worth it. If you live rural and don't have a lot of choices I think that it is totally worth the money to meet your personal needs that night not be met by limited options. If you love independent music, a variety of talk, low key not so big chainy structured radio then having the bazillion options for listening will really suit your needs.
If you are a night owl and love radio at night but are totally limited by what is aired after normal listening hours the variety might be right. So, as you can see, it really does depend. If any of those above mentioned examples is pertinent to you then I totally think it is worth it.
If you are running up credit card debt as we speak I don't think I would do it for any of the above mentioned reasons.
Its Its purely a personal decision. A lot of people are perfectly happy with no radio, or prefer to play their own Cd's. Then again I know several people that LOVE having XM radio in car and at home.
