This is a good question since it appears that many people believe astrology to be a valid pastime for anything other than entertainment. In my view, astrology was an honest attempt to make sense of what we see when we look up at night. It was developed simultaneously in early China as well as Mesopotamia independent one from the other.
It was a failed attempt but one that served as actual knowledge for more than 5,000 years or until the Greeks, whichever came first. Astronomy, on the other hand is real science and unlike astrology, serves to inform us about the complexities of our newly discovered universe. Most of what we now know about our Universe was discovered by a handful of individuals in the 20th century.
Until the good Dr Hubble, we didn’t even know that our Milky Was wasn’t the entire Universe. Many of us learn something in high school and assume such knowledge was always known which causes the very few to lay claim to the creation of the Universe by the christian god. (note) the spell check wants me to capitalize the “c:” in christian.
I will not honor any religion by capitalization of the first letter until at least one of them achieves something worthy of the effort; as this is highly unlikely, I am not about to start any time soon). Baseless claims do not serve as fact. So, it could be considered wise not to associate astrology with anything other than an original, failed attempt at astronomy and later a gigantic con-job with self appointed sooth sayers no better than the uninformed fundamentalist preacher who quotes 2000 year old characters as if he had some verifiable source.
Bottom line: Astronomy = poppycock and Astronomy = real science just like Evolution.
Correction of my typing not to mention, brain. It should read: Astrology = poppycock and Astronomy = real science just like Evolution. I never claimed that I could type.
'I hunt n peck', pathetic but true.
Actually astronomy as a science was born out of the ancient science of Astrology which is the study of the constellations as well as the planets that make up our solar system and their influence on us. To quote in part some info:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~crystalinks.com/astrology.htmlNumerous traditions and applications employing astrological concepts have arisen since its earliest recorded beginnings in the 3rd millennium BC. Astrology has played an important role in the shaping of culture, early astronomy, the Vedas, and various disciplines throughout history.
In fact, astrology and astronomy were often regarded as synonyms before the modern era, with the desire for predictive and divinatory knowledge one of the motivating factors for astronomical observation. Astronomy began to diverge from astrology after a period of gradual separation from the Renaissance up until the 18th century. Eventually, astronomy distinguished itself as the empirical study of astronomical objects and phenomena, without regard to the terrestrial implications of astrology.
The word "astrology" comes from the Latin term astrologia ("astronomy"), which in turn derives from the Greek noun astron ("constellation" or "star") and -logia ("the study of"). - also -History of astrologyMany believe that the origins of much of the astrological doctrine and method that would later develop in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are found among the ancient Babylonians and their system of celestial omens that began to be compiled around the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. They believe this system of celestial omens later spread, either directly or indirectly through the Babylonians and Assyrians, to other areas such as the Middle East, and Greece, where it merged with pre-existing indigenous forms of astrology.
Thus, Babylonian astrology migrated to Greece, initially as early as the middle of the 4th century BC, and then around the late 2nd or early 1st century BC, after the Alexandrian conquests, this Babylonian astrology was mixed with the Egyptian tradition of decanic astrology to create horoscopic astrology. This new form of astrology, which appears to have originated in Alexandrian Egypt, spread across the ancient world into Europe, the Middle East, and India with varying degrees of influence. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ end quoteRegarding Astrology, most people who have not studied the subject are quick to refute the influence of the planets here in our solar system but no one in their right mind would deny the influence of our moon on the Earth's water systems.
We DO have the flow of tides in which water rises and falls regularly by the hour in some places due to the moon and Earth's gravitational interaction. You can read more about the traditions of Hindu astrology, Western astrology, and Chinese astrology, at the website I provided above. It's also interesting to see how alchemy has led to the science of chemistry: "Historically, alchemy in the Western World was particularly allied and intertwined with traditional Babylonian-Greek style astrology; in numerous ways they were built to complement each other in the search for occult or hidden knowledge.

No, they are not! Astrology is an old pseudo-science that some people blindly believe. It asserts that the positions of the planets, Sun and Moon in the sky have some major effect upon people's personalities and behavior.
I studied it and did horoscopes for people. I observed that believers saw only parts that were somewhat accurate and totally ignored many more than were quite wrong. I made up my own stuff that sounded like what my books said, and people found it to be as accurate or more so than the quotes from my Llewellen's horoscope delineator.
Astronomy is a genuine science that studies the stars, planets, galaxies, etc. in space, and it says nothing about any relationship of stars and planets to our behavior.
No, they are not. Early man was quite aware of the stars, planets and moon that moved overhead in the evening. I think humans have always looked for causal connections between events in life and cyclical aspects of nature.
I believe that this predilection for prediction, coupled with their then limited ability to observe more than mere motion, lead to qualities of human nature being associated with the relative positions of objects in the night sky. Just as alchemy lead to advances in chemistry and metallurgy, astrology lead to advances in mathematics and to astronomy. We are on the threshold of 12/21/12, the Mayans end of time, because of their achievement in designing a mechanical calender that accurately presaged our present heavenly canopy.
They were practicing Mayan astrology and astronomy. Who then could have envisioned the astronomy of today. We can see farther that, less than a century ago, was thought possible, and in wavelengths above and below common vision.
As devastating as it was to a portion of the populace whose belief in an Earth-centered universe was contradicted by astronomers, the belief in a universe that was created complete has likewise been contradicted. The parent, astrology, however, remains alive and well. Experiences years ago led me to believe that a correlation between my life and my astrological chart existed.
However, over time I noticed that I was no longer under astrological influences (I'll admit Jupiter is probably the reason). Humbly, I think astrology is in the category of religion. Evidence for or against its validity is in the eye of the beholder.
No. One is a science, and the other is hocus pocus, mumbo jumbo superstition with no basis in science.
