Is China harmless to the United States?

On Tuesday Ted Turner stated during an interview with Charlie Rose that China is harmless to the United States, that "they just want to sell us shoes". newsbusters.org/blogs/brent-baker/2008/0..., WAPO reports that China has an extensive spying program targeting the U.S., and that a conviction has been handed down against a Chinese-born spy for channeling sensitive plans for Navy ships, submarines and weapons to China for two decades. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/02/AR2008040203952_pf.htmlWhat do you believe about China?

Harmless, as adjective to describe is Delusional. The amount of the threat & the exact direction of the threat may be debatable, but harmless is not in the equation. In spite of the fact that the US way of life has made Ted Turner very rich, he has nothing good to say about the US.

A fact I remember from a long time ago: The USSR would spend 20 yrs to set up a spy network in the US & Communist China would spend 50 yrs to set up a spy network. Don't ask for a cite. It came out of an article on spies in the US.

Whatever Communist China's intentions are, the only real question is how much harm do they wish for the US. Communist China is the source of the weapons nuke programs for N Korea, Iran, Pakistan, and Lybia & Iraq when they had one. China was the source of what ever nuke materials that the Israelis bombed a few months ago.

Communist China sits back & watches things unfold, none of which affects them but is to the disadvantage of the US. I was on a Euro tour a few years ago and had a discussion with our tour guide. She felt Communist hina was a greater threat to Europe & I felt Islam was the greater threat. My thoughts are that Communist China will sit back & watch the war between the western infidels & Islam and then take on the weakened winner.

This was the same Commie strategy used in WWII. The Commie Chinese held back & conserved men & supplies because they knew the US & Britain would defeat the Japs. The Nationalist Chinese did fight the Japs.

At the end of WWII, the Communist army fully rested & supplied fought the Nationalist Chinese & took over China.

Any major country would be INSANE not to be gathering intel on the US. If China meant the US harm, they could do it. Easily.

Keep in mind that China is the #2 holder of US debt, after Japan. If China really wanted to mess with the US they could do it through trade sanctions. Think our economy is bad now, immagine what happens when WalMart disappears.

But it is not in their best interest to do so. Their economy is tied to ours strongly enough that hurting us will hurt them as well. (Just not as badly.) On the subject of spying, however, keep in mind that the US does MASSIVE amounts of international spying.

We put wiretaps on undersea cables, and fund operatives in virtually every country on the globe. It is hypocritical for the US not to expect other countries to do this to us..

1 Cryogaijin, regarding your answer "Any major country would be INSANE not to be gathering intel on the US. ":Using your own point, it would be financial suicide for China to try to sanction our trade. It could do nothing but financial harm to them.

Not sure why you suggested that. As far as U.S. Spying, you make a weak comparison. While we may listen in on undersea telephone cables, it is not for the purpose of stealing military secrets.

There is extremely little of military use anywhere in the world that has not been developed by or with the cooperation of the U.S.

":Wal Mart, to some the Big Evil, would survive; they got their start with the slogan "Made in the USA". However, should you be correct in the collapse of Wal Mart, many other big name retailers would be right behind them.

Wal Mart does not have a monopoly on the import of Chinese produced items. I almost get a sense of pleasure at the thought of Wal Mart & the US collapsing.
