According to the 'official rules' -- the only rule against playing the the Wild Draw Four is if the player throwing the card has the color that is being played in hand. FOr example, if there is a Yellow 6 on top of the deck, and it is my turn, and my only cards in hand are a Red 6 and a WD4, I CAN throw the WD4 and maintain the color as yellow.

However, if my hand were a Yellow 9 and WD4, I would HAVE to play the yellow card and wait until my next turn to play the WD4.
