Absolutely not. It is never okay to ask for a gift. In fact, it's oxymoronic.

If you ask for it, it's by definition not a gift.

Generally, the gifts are for the wedding (since too many engagements end before then. ) Thus, asking gifts at an engagement party amounts to asking folks to give gifts twice, which really sounds wrong to most people (besides the whole "asking for gifts" in the first place. ) .

It is never ok to ask people to bring a gift to any party. People know that gifts are expected, and asking them to being gifts sound grasping and greedy - not to mention that if makes it sound like you are only having the party to get presents, rather than celevrating a happy time.

Personally I can't think of anything ruder, except many asking for money.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
