I wouldn't do it. There's going to be a bit of spilled fuel. One spark from static electricity or clinking tools and you have a conflagration.
My bro-in-law burned down his garage that way. If you're going to do it, have a good friend standing ten feet away, not smoking, and holding a fire extinguisher. Instruct them to use it when your hair catches on fire.
Thank you. I appreciate the advice, especially about the fire extinquisher. The little detail suggests it is not a job to do down at the end of the parking lot.

Siphoning off gas is both good and bad-- it makes the tank lighter and easier to remove, but it makes more air-space in the tank which quickly becomes gas-vapor filled which leads to a bigger explosion.
Of course, it's possible. It's not necessarily EASY, and I would definitely recommend looking over a service manual for the procedure BEFORE committing to it. That way you won't be surprised if you suddenly need a specialty tool for the procedure.
Also keep in mind the fire precautions AH mentions.
Right it is possible and I have studied the procedures it might be safe if significant safety measures are taken, such as siphoning off as much gas as possible and having a ground wire on the tank and my wrist and a change of clothes to get the gasoline off me. So maybe I save $380 or maybe I set the car on fire with my nose 2" from the gas tank? Women like my eyes, nose & lips, so maybe spend the $380 and take my current gal out for Bar-B-Que instead of lobster or rack of lamb.
Thanks for the good advice. ModelT 9 months ago .
My brother changed the pump in his pickup without undue crispiness. Work in a well ventilated space; and don't worry too much about siphoning gas, except to make the tank easier to wrestle around. You WILL have the smell of gas to consider, though.
Thanks for the answer, I appreciate the suggestion about ventilation,I have decided to take the new pump and gasket to the shop and pay for the three hours of labor and shop time. ModelT 9 months ago .
I generally opt for paying someone else, too... I've lost enough skin off my knuckles; and the last time I did a DIY repair I ran out of swear words halfway through.
Thanks, that is a good one. I appreciate the laughs. I had not thought of that as I usually quit before reaching that point.
Not that I have an especially long list of curses, just that I have stripped enough bolts in the past or broken the tops off of cheap Chinese made ones that I have a shorter toleration rate for these situations than I did back in the 1970s and early 80s when I was young enough to slide under a car and not end up with pinched nerves in my neck and back. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
