In Psalms 22 you have over 20 things that would happen to Jesus during his trial, crucifixion and burial detailed. This Psalms appears to have been composed by King David around 1000 BC. In the Dead Sea Scrolls we have surviving copies of this Psalm that predate the life of Jesus by 150 ro 300 years.
The very first words that Jesus spoke on the cross ("My God, my God, why have you forsaken me...") are the opening words of Psalms 22. This was one of the Psalms that every Jewish male learned in school. The instructor would speak the opening line and the students were expected to recite the rest of the poem.
When Jesus spoke those words, every person who heard him should have remembered that Psalm and been able to see that the suffering predicted in that Psalm were being fulfilled before them. They were witnessing a pivotal moment in history. It list things like: The words his enemies would use to mock him That his hands and feet would be pierced That his bones would be pulled out of place by the crucifixion (even though they did not practice that yet) None of his bones would be broken The soldiers would gamble for his clothing He would thirst He would be entombed in another man's grave That grave would belong to a rich man Even the last three words of the Psalm (in Greek) are the same as the last three words that Jesus spoke from the cross ("It is finished".).
Jesus Himself quoted the book of Psalms more than any other Old Testament text. Beyond the Savior’s own use of these writings, the authors of the four Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John drew heavily on the psalms as they strove to document His life and ministry, particularly those excruciating hours of His arrest, trial, and Crucifixion”. With the events surrounding Jesus Christ’s suffering and death, read the following scripture passages: Matthew 27:27–43, 46; Luke 23:46; John 19:31–33, 36.
As you read, look for the specific experiences Jesus Christ had during His Crucifixion. Following His Resurrection, Jesus Christ appeared to His Apostles and taught them how He had fulfilled the prophecies concerning Himself that were written in the psalms and other Old Testament passages.
